DTC100 and Pioneer 510 HELP!

290 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  SteveMcWilliams
Well after fidling around with my new toy today (DTC100) I was able to resolve almost all installation issues but one. I have the DTC100 hooked up to the 510 via a 15-Pin VGA cable (borrowing one of my computer monitor cables since the DTC100 didn't come with a VGA cable). While receiving HDTV content from CBS tonight (via TWC) everything looked great but everytime the station went to commercials the picture shrunk leaving about 4 inch black bars on both sides of the image. Once the HDTV content came back on the picture displayed in regular 16:9 mode and used the full screen. I tripple checked everything as far as the settings go. The DTC is set for a 16:9 display using the second setting for the VGA timing which should be the correct setting for this TV. The TV locks in full mode when the signal is coming from the VGA input so I doubt the TV is at fault here. I tried adjusting the screen in one of the DTC100 menus but it just moves the image which still leaves black bars on both sides. The firmware of the DTC is 4.037A if I remember correctly. Any insights into the matter would be highly appreciated.

Hi MarcW,

I am a DTC-100 and PRO-510HD owner as well. While I don't get CBS in HD, I do receive PBS, occasionally ABC, HDnet and HBO in high-def. From your description, I don't think you have any equipment or configuration problems. Most likely what you are seeing is that advertisements, even on HD broadcasts, are not produced for HD in the 16:9 aspcect ratio. Most ads are in 4:3 and the black bars are added by the broadcaster to properly "fill out" your 16:9 display. Hope this info helps!

Marc,

As far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with your set up. This is normal. BTW I have had the same set up as you for almost two years and for the most part have been satisfied with the results.
First of all thanks for the replies I appreciate it. I was playing around with my setup some more this morning and found that all non-HDTV content on the digital CBS channel has the black bars not just the commercials. When I hit info on the DTC remote it displays that this is indeed a digital 16:9 broadcast. So why would it have black bars then if this is a true 16:9 broadcast ? All other non digital channels show as 4:3 on the DTC info status bar and are properly stretched to full mode according to my settings in the DTC. I'm puzzled.....

Most 16:9 HD channels do not stretch 4:3 content, like commercials or shows not filmed in HD, to fill the screen. Rather they put actual black bars on the left and right in the signal, just like letterboxed DVDs have fixed bars on the top and bottom.

Since the signal is still 16:9 all the time, and not dynamically switching between 16:9 and 4:3, your STB displays it as is. It has no way of knowing what the picture actually looks like.

Hope this helps.
