Hey All,

I think I am having some trouble with playing back DTS Tracks.. I have The Police DTS CD and when I play the tracks the music I thought was supposed to come out the Rear Speakers, instead it comes out the Side Rears?

I have a Marantz 4001 7.1 Reciever with a 7.1 speaker setup.. I was wondering why the sound is coming out the side rears instead of the Exterme Rears??

I am going to double check the Speaker Alignment with a Test tone, I am trying to find a Channel Test tone speaker identification disk that has a DTS Encoded on it..

It's a 5.1 mix. In 5.1, the surrounds are, uh, the surrounds (the side speakers). In 7.1, the additional two channels are the rear speakers. So it's playing how it's supposed to.

Well I thought the Rears is where it would play from?? If I had a 5.1 Reciver it would play out the rears why does it not do that now??

I did find a workaround to get it working out the rears but I was just curious to see why in a 7.1 setup it plays out the side surrounds??

Only because those speakers were at the wrong location.

See diagrams from Dolby Labs below:

Notice that 5.1 has speakers along the sides, not behind.

I will use the other method to get the rears to work I like that method better..

Only if you place your surround speakers in the wrong location.

What sanjay is alluding to is that calling them "rears" in a 5.1 setup is technically incorrect, as they would still be connected to the side surround speaker outputs. But, yes, in many 5.1 setups the surround speakers are often located more rearward than the side surrounds are located in a 7.1 setup.

A few manufacturers offer AVRs that circumvent the 'issue' with a specific setting that allows the rear surrounds to be used as the surround speakers when playing back 5.1 music.

As others have stated: if you have a 7.1 speaker setup BUT are only listening to 5.1 the speakers that WILL be used will be the front 3 and the Left and Right "Side Surround" speakers. Now if you use something like DD PLIIx or DTS Neo6 to take 2.0 or 5.1 source material to 7.1 then you will also get sound out of the "Rear Surrounds". If you used to have a 5.1 system with speakers on the rear wall then that was setup wrong, as 5.1 doesn't have speakers on the rear wall it has speakers on the side wall.
