DTV Capture Card Overview

Preface
  • Do Not post in this thread. Use the Discussion Thread for questions, points of fact and whatever. This thread is intended to be a clear and concise overview that can be easily referenced; as opposed to a thread of a-thousand-and-one posts, in which information becomes buried, obfuscated or muddled, or is plagued by the same FAQ's. If you post in this thread, I will simply ask the moderators to nuke your material - even if its bona fide great information. Simply, use the discussion thread.
  • This is a WIP (work in progress). This initial phase will take time to complete. It will take time to maintain. There are bound to be some mistakes for various reasons. Corrections and additions will be made as time permits and as warranted. The format/layout may change as warranted or needed.
  • This is not an exhaustive list, although a far reaching aim would be to someday reach such status
  • This will become a community effort. That is, if no one participates in the Discussion Thread, don't count on me bothering following through with anything else. Ideally, a few other posters should have posting rights for this thread, adding sections/material (such as the major topic of Software) and thread maintenance. The community can work these details out, and how to proceed.
  • Use the forums wonderful search feature for further information, as it is likely your question has been discussed before. If your search turns up a thread with 8 zillion posts, use the forum's wonderful 'search within a thread' feature to find the particular details you're seeking instead of wading through 7.99zillion posts.

S1. Overview of How DTV cards Work

I will write a description soon.

a) how analog cards work -- provides background context

b) how digital cards work i) software decoding and ii) hardware decoding

c) how do I get qam (MCE, Sage, .... )

d) why can't I use my cable or sat stb; aka component in, dvi in

e) reception variabilities
