Dual subs for 12×30×8 room

847 Views 12 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  kblackburn101
Would a pair of HSU VTF-15H MK2 be sufficient for the room size and good fit? Any other ideas?

-Dedicated basement room - 12 Wide x30 Deep x 7-8 Ceilings (has soffit through middle section). There is a doorway off of front left speaker and a doorway 2/3 off the way back.

-100% home theater use -movies most with some tv

-main listening position is ~10 ft to mains. Will be 7.2.4 overall

$2000 budget or so

Thanks

Whether or not it's enough depends in part on your skill in placement and integration, as well as your preferences for volume. It is about the best you can do for $2k. You should be able to get reference level (115 db) output down to about 25 hz or so and close to that at 20hz.

Alternatives are to buy a single beast for ~$2k and add another later, or DIY. Or go quads later.....

Most people would be happy with dual VTF-MK2 in that room but not everyone who hangs out here.... How much of a basshead are you?

I lived in an apt before so I used crowsons to shake the couch with a small sub turned low and it helped. I don't think I'm as big of a basshead as guys on here, but close.
It should be. Worst case you add one more at some point.
Yeah that will be a great start. If you still have the crowsons you can use them to fill in the ULF feeling on the low end.

As mentioned, take the time to find the best positions for the subs and integrate them together manually if your receiver or processor can’t. Should be a good config!

Avr is the Denon x3700h. I'll read more on placement, I know of the sub craw but it's been a while. Since it's a dedicated room placement is pretty open besides room constraints (mainly the 12 foot is narrow) and the doors.

I'm still figuring out speakers and I can up the budget if it's needed. Was hoping 2 15"s would be overkill, but seems like it's on the it should be enough end off the spectrum

Thanks

can't go wrong with 2 HSU 15's. Are you willing to spend the proper time needed to dial them in?

Yes, for sure, up to my ability. I fiddle and research things to a fault. If something is off I almost obsese thinking about it. This adventure started with looking for a new oled TV and realizing I needed a new avr for 2.1 HDMI. Now I'm going jvc projector, new surround, subs, speaker placement, researching black out cloth and room treatments for sound. I feel like I'm going down the rabbit hole again. As I'm sure a lot of guys on here do.

True bassheads lurk in the DIY section (50+ subs with 100k watts, etc).

I'd start with at least dual 15"s, 18"s if you can hack it. There's always the single 21" option with the ability to add a second down the road.

I don't have any experience with modern Denon's but I hear good things on them for use up to 2 subs. I'm sure one of the Denon experts will chime in eventually. Regardless, you've got all the right things to get started.

Thanks,

Oh yeah, I don't quality as a basshead then. Not up for fyi. Last sub box I made was 15-20 years ago. Can't remember the brand other than it was a teal logo and it and the amp cost way more than I should of. Do remember using rainbow speakers, I think a German brand for the 3 way components up front.
It's not that big of a room at about 2900 cubes or less. 2 HSU 15s would be more than enough for nearly everyone.

Wouldn’t expect overkill but plenty above 20hz !!!
