Don't ask me why, but i need to know if there is a way to connect my surround system such that I have a choice of listening to television programs with the TV speaker or the external speakers? I have a new Pioneer Elite receiver and a Pioneer 6070HD plasma tv. Thanks in advance for your help. If you have an answer, please put it in simplistic terms as I am a newbie who knows very little about all of this stuff.

What is the source for your TV programs (eg. cable box, satellite box, etc)? Most boxes will have multiple outputs, you can connect one set to the receiver/processor (eg. the SPDIF digital output), and another set (eg. the analog red/white RCA outputs) to the TV directly.

Run a HDMI cable directly to the TV from the cable/sat box. This allows you to watch Television using to TV's internal speakers.

Also run an optical cable from the cable/sat box to receiver for audio.

That's it!
