Just for the record nobody is forced to run the Zappiti server from the cloud. I run mine locally from my own PC and it is much more efficient that way.
Sure, if you have a PC running all the time that’s fine. They only support Austor and Synology on the NAS side. Despite having nearly 500 votes and being the no 1 most requested feature there is no Zappiti server for Qnap. A docker would be nice so that you can run it on most NAS devices.
It’s a shame really.

Really don't mean this to be a Zappiti bashing session, I know they have a loyal following, but I was genuinely stunned when I recently updated mine to the first new firmware release since 2018 and found that framerates were still off in ALL modes (including all 2K modes) except 4K23 10-bit 444. (I was curious to see if the interface had improved...)

I really thought they would have addressed that by now. I know Dune never did with the Pro, but at least Zappiti tried, it's just they never finished the job and we know it's possible with that chipset because Zidoo did it in the X9s.

Just had to get that off my chest - it's been bugging me :)

Well my own experience:

Zappiti - great media centre, OK player
Dune Realbox - ok media centre, ok player
Cambridge Audio CXUHD - great player for everything except ISO, no interface you could actually speak of.

Simple solution - I use all three :D

Pretty much how I do it - Zidoo for 4K, Shield for streaming and Dune for 2K.

I learnt long ago that you'll never find a one box solution and I always roll my eyes a little bit when people demand that the one box they happened to buy should do everything.

Being a real sucker for new things like Mark I am in to get me a Dune HD Pro 4K II Plus when it gets out just to play with it and potentially for my bedroom.

Having plenty media players I only can agree the ideal player can't exist due to amongst others conflicting design criteria. I use my Zidoo Z9S (including External USB DAC) for movies, Egreat A11 for Seamless Branching BD and BD-Menu's with problems and my Android TV for Streaming Services. Music is a mixed bag but now playing with a borrowed Zidoo UHD2000 which frankly does a very good job for Music including SACD (DSD output). I expect to get myself a Zidoo X as a replacement for both my Z9S and Egreat A11 doing also Music. The Seamless Branching problem seems to be fixed (but not including 3D yet), but the Dune will be the new backout just in case.

All very interesting - thanks again!
I think I will try out the Dune Realbox, since I don't care about the look of the Media Center so much.
I quite often just use the explorer...

But working forced subs would be nice!

Is it possible to run the Zappiti Server on my Qnap NAS? The Zappiti Cloud is really annoying...

Could anyone confirm whether or not the Dune can stream gapless playback of FLAC files over smb? My Zappiti has a ~2 second delay when transitioning between tracks and it makes the entire listening experience nauseating when trying to listen to albums such as Abbey Road or Dark Side of the Moon. Many thanks in advance.

Sorry, no - I just tried DSOTM in flac and there's a horrific gap - more than 2s.

As always, these players are not the best choice for music.

Bummer. Thanks for testing it out for me.

May I point out to XRECODE3 Windows application. Does a great job for any music conversion including DSD.
I use it mainly to convert MCH DSD => MCH FLAC and multi track FLAC to single track FLAC with CUE sheets (MCH or 2CH).
The last to play gapless with live albums. Both conversions work fine with Dune and Zidoo Music Players to overcome their limitations as a bypass. Both supporting HD audio but without gapless playback.

Does Dune support CUE sheets with FLAC for track selection and display?

All my flac files are tagged so I don't use cue sheets - if you can tell me a quick way to create a cue from a directory of flacs I'll try it...

XRECODE3 will create one for you from the folder. It has a free trial period.
Create a single FLAC at the same time and you all ready to try.
So yes, it supports cue sheets, so a single flac and cue sheet is a workaround for gapless playback.

Very nice little program that.

It will decode to PCM stereo, but it won't decode for example AC3 from a TrueHD stream or DTS from a DTS-HD stream.

What it will do is use the core DTS stream in a DTS-HD stream but you can't do the same with Dolby TrueHD or Atmos since Dolby don't include a core stream in their spec.

You'd need to mux in an AC3 track for Dolby HD material.
Hi,

Realbox 4K Android version is 7. Can I hope upgrade to Android 9 in near future?

Thanks

Personally I very much doubt it - the Dune front end is a Linux shell sitting on the OS so there's no real reason to upgrade that.

I purchased this box from futeko delivery took 2 days so that was a good start

Well I have a pch 200, pch 300, pch 400 and a pch 500 and they were really good and I used YAMJ to provide the movie wall. performance was rock solid and once YAMJ was set up simplicity itself to use. Yes you lost the menu with the 400 and 500 series but menus were very slow and sketchy with the 200/300 units

When popcorn the company "died" oh for a 4K 600 series. I got an Solo 4K. never really liked it My Collection was cumbersome and I never got the hang of yaDIS. so i was bubmbling along for about two years until I picked up a M9702. Now this is brilliant no movie wall but flawless DVD/BD/UHD image playback as it should as it is a oppo 203 without the drive. But I do want a movie wall.

So aweek ago I dusted off the Solo reinstalled it and finally got to grips with yaDIS following a number of post from Markswift . What a joy to use scraping is brilliant yes a bit short on some features mainly selection of different disk versions, for example a DVD, BD or the UHD of a movie but I could work around this. So as this could be a solution to the movie/tv wall and get BD menus I decided to get this realbox 4K, "only" £150.00 so what have I got to lose. My intent was to team it up with yadis and I felt I was 80% of my way back to my preferred pch/YAMJ system.

I should add that I also have a zidoo z9s and was using HT2/3 but it keeps stalling on large librarys and the menu and seamless branching issues areIt is truely small getting on my nerves.

So now to the realbox 4K Now bear in mind that I have only had two days with this and only spent about 3 hours playing with it

Now this is small. Plugged it in it sets itself up and we have a Dune in all its glory. Yes the menu could be more modern but it works and you know were everything is How can I put it "it's comfy"
Set up the networking loaded yadis from the NAS and bang there it is menus etc even Avatar, the JohnWick discs Thor Raganarok you name it they work
So it thought I would try out My Collection.

Same operation as before so I did not hold out for much.

Boy was I wrong. What have they done.

It is nothing like the "My Collection" on the Solo 4K. Yes the Movie wall and how to present it is still "clunky but once you get a view that you like it's not bad at all

Limited editing of posters etc but the scraping has improved to an amazing extent and then I tried tv shows. If anything the scraping of these exceeds the move scraper. It was not like this and it is not like this in the Solo 4k Dune have transformed My Collection

Not up to the eye candy an of the zidoo wall and My Collection and HT3 suffer from the lack of external editing and NAS storage so you can't have one database. The backup and restore on th of HT2/3 is a decent wrkaround . My Collection is "fixed" to each box so you cannot share the generated database But performance wise it actually give yaDIS a good run for the money. It also "stacks" the disc editions/ and you can select which one to play.

TheVideo performance is amazing especially when compared to the Solo 4k image quality is very good . Downscaling and hdr to sdr is good you can also as in the z9s "force" dd from True HD . So I can use this on my 1080p tv and non True HD soundbar as well as my 4K projector and HDMI2 receiver until it's big brother the 4K II comes out

accessing the android setup gives you all the developer mods as per the Ziddo z9s. It seems also to have a wifi hot spot but I have not got that working yet.

I have not worked out if you can have external system storage which would allow "unlimited" My Collection database size I have tried the "legacy" scripts but these are not compatible.

yYes some limitations but in my opinion these are very few and it is very early days. I will definitely get the Pro 4K II for the projector but really apart form the system storage issue which has not really effected anything yet.

Well I think we are getting close to a one box solution maybe not the Pro4K II but possibly the next generation. But if this box is anything to go by the pro 4k II potentially only offers an incremental improvement on this box.

I think this box is simply amazing and really Dune seemed to have nailed the actual operating system and if they could make more improvements to My Collection such as external storage and editing there is a lot to look forward to in the Dune camp.
Yes i am sure that there are some image processing flaws but dare I say it this would be nitpicking

Did I mention that this box is brilliant and only £150.00 This sets a high bar indeed for the 16xx SOC units to come

bargain

If the 16xx SOC offers 10-15% more performance whatever that can bring to the party then they should be astounding boxes .

It is always nice to read enthusiastic reports on a device especially one this new. I decided to wait for the HD Pro 4K II but almost regret not getting the Realbox, it seems to have a strong level of maturity already. Some media players are like raising a spoiled kid, they never grow up.

The supplied remote is simply adds learning capability to our buttons but loses the slickness of the Solo 4K remote. The Realbox remote feels light and is not as balanced in the hand despite the larger physical size and has "clunky" button presses. The Solo remote works with the Realbox. So no change in the IR database.

Cannot find how to add system memory tried an empty micro sd formatted as ext3 and a reinstall of firmware but no dice. It would seem that this feature is not n the firmware as yet!

My Collection database is stored in the box's flash memory which starts with about 10Gb free. I assume that this would also store data from other apps so this could limit performance eventually.

Got the wifi hotspot setup as well

all in all the android system is the same as the zidoo z series Probably comes as no great surprise as the basic boxes are simply differ in the "operating firmware" flashed into the physical unit.

So it is a case of who has the more proficient programmers for the features that Dune/Zidoo/Zappiti etc can eke out of the sdk in line with their customer base. And who can provide "better" service ie firmware updates

It will be roughly double the speed as it is 6 core and each are faster CPUs/GPUs than RTD1296 has which are already better than the onces used by Realbox.

The HW acceleration and features are the same but it doubles the CPU, Memory and Flash as one of the justifications for the higher price.

I shall see what the "benefits/advantages" are. I have a Pro 4K II on order
I have also contacted Dune with details of my issues with My Collection, memory storage and the potential to store the database off of the box itself wheter it be configures sd o, NAS or USB

Also another "quirk" Certain items in the Developer's menu do not "stick" ie wifi hotspot, TrueHD to HD sound conversion all revert I think after putting the box into standby.

You have to go back into Setup- Android settings... and re-engage them
