The repair guy came and I have something (it looked like dust to me) on the convex mirror within the projector. HLT-6176s

It's a big bent piece of reflective material. He said it's sealed and you can't get in there. So he put everything back together and said that will be $100.

gee thanks.

Is there a way to dust that thing off that anyone knows of. It seems to me that dust in means it's not sealed. I may have to just take everything apart for myself and see if there is a way I could get a shot of compressed air in there or something.

Any suggestions or information on what exactly that is

I opened one of these up once. I learned that the optics in there are so delicate that as soon as you touch them they will never be the same. Some of the glass has polarized coatings that if you try to clean become ruined. Those curved mirrors are basically very thin, flexible, semi-transparent plastic lenses with shiny surfaces that are very easy to damage. If you have the service manual, a box of latex gloves, a clean room, some scientific grade optical cleaning materials/tools, and a few days to spare then go for it. Air is just gonna move the dust around and probably make it worse.

I guess I have to leave it alone then. I was worried about trying to blow some air in there and only just move the dust around and make it worse.

If it is meant to be sealed, then they should SEAL the damn thing so nothing gets in there. What a stupid design. Or make it so it can be cleaned some how, even if only by a pro.

Thanks for the info.

What a bummer

Just an update if anyone is interested.

I took the whole thing apart and that portion (convex mirror and polarized glass is NOT sealed. Four small screws and the glass piece slides right out and the convex mirror is exposed.

I cleaned the glass with the purist alcohol (> 90%) I could fine and lens cleaning cloth. This is similar to what the tech did without removing the glass.

Key to the whole deal is I took the glass out and cleaned the convex mirror (in place) very carefully with VERY light to almost no pressure with the lens cleaning cloth (no solution). It was caked with dust compared to after I cleaned it.

The PQ is back to like when it was new. I didn't realize how grainy the picture gets over time until I cleaned the convex mirror. I am back to like new

The tech was full of it, it's not sealed and that's the problem, if fact it comes apart very easily. Dust gets in there. He was in a hurry and I think I get crappy service call. I could see how you would NEVER want to move the convex mirror. Only clean it in place without moving it.

The biggest mistake I have ever made with this TV was cleaning the rear outside with compressed air. That shot the dust all over the place internally. I will not do that again.
