is it possible to modify a DVB tuner (digital video broadcast, European satellite standard) in order for it to output SDI signals? And would that increase the quality of the signal? If positive, would all of this be compatible with the CI modules (common interface, a non-proprietary encryption scheme used by many European content providers)?

Yes it is possible but not always easy I woudl imagine, yes it improves the pictures and yes is is compatable with CIM.

THe SDI mod goes after the MPEG decoder when the stream has already been decoded.

Adriano ; see Immersive web site. They're selling the SDI-equipped capture card and they do sell updgrades to a number of dvd players and I think it has been discussed that dvb tuners can be modified.

Boostercorp.fr has already modified some dvb tuners to add PSM1/Cinematrix capability. For sure they can do SDI-out also.
