DVD and BD Ripper problem

766 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  hceuterpe
I'm looking for a ripper that will rip dolby 7.1 audio with the video. I have DVDfab, magic DVD and J river installed but they will only give me 5.1. I'm not doing any compression straight 1 to 1. If I play the movie straight from WMP it decodes at 7.1 but not after ripping. What profile should I be using with those rippers or will they not rip 7.1? Thanks

Wow that's pretty crappy for what I think is pay software. Sounds like you are only get digital audio that can pass through S/PDIF (i.e. DVD audio formats).

Try tsmuxer. Note however, that uncompressed, and especially 7.1 channel audio does not exist for the DVD video spec. So if you are trying for DVD, that's your prob. Even AVCHD which can handle HD video, cannot handle lossless audio over 2-channels.
hceuterpe,

Thanks for replying. I understand that some DVD's will play in 6.1 surround sending the same signal to both surround back channels for 7.1, but if it's decoded that way and I'm supposedly ripping exactly whats on the disc that it doesn't give me the 6.1 option. I only get 6 channel option which is showing up as 5.1. The receiver is showing the 7.1 signal when playing straight thru WMP. I'll give tsmuxer a shot and see if I like that any better. I'm using the trial period copies of DVD fab and magic DVD. I wonder if that has something to do with it. I actually like magic DVD and it has been about 10 minutes quicker to rip than DVDfab. It only does DVD though. I'll try some different decoding and see if it makes any difference.. thanks again

That's DTS-ES. It's 6.1 discrete, but it's still compressed audio. No 7.1 discrete at all, compressed or not.

DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD have their core DTS and Dolby Digital tracks respectively. Often, a DTS-HD MA track with 6.1 (and I think 7.1 even), the core track will be DTS-ES.

You are seeing 7.1 audio because likely your speaker configuration is showing as 7.1 on your computer.. You are probably seeing 7.1 PCM on the receiver. This is not the same thing.
