DVD Audio and SACD but what about HDCD?

I know that the audio wars are still being fought by DVD Audio and SACDs but I don't hear about HDCDs much. Since my very first DVD player showed HDCD as one of it's formats it played I've always wondered about but have never seen one.

Is it superior to a CD? I would ask if it is superior to SACD or DVD Audio but I'm guessing there wouldn't have been a need for two other new audio formats if it was.

If anyone has had a chance to compare the three I would be very interested in your feedback. It just makes you wonder how many different CD formats claiming better quality we are going to see?

HDCD was an attempt to encode some additional information into an otherwise Redbook-compatible CD. To a degree, it was a success but never made a significant impact in the general market. Not a real issue, these days, and, I note, you had an HDCD-compatible player but never had such a disc. QED.

I have a few HDCD's. Many of them aren't marked, and the ones that are marked only have a tiny logo in a corner maybe, they aren't advertised differently or anything. Green Day-Nimrod, Tool-Lateralus, and Nine Inch Nails-We're in This Together (single) are all HDCD. Also, the song "Into the Void" on NIN-The Fragile is HDCD but the rest of the album is not somehow...
