Never bought from them myself, but have heard of others buying from them before w/out problems. If you need PAL->NTSC conversion, I suggest sticking w/ JVC for quality and reliability although the Malata's have a lot of fans due to their x-y scaling features.
You can also get a Philips player like the 963sa and apply a remote hack using certain kinds of remotes like a One-for-All, a Pronto or Palm Pilot running OmniRemote. Last I heard, J&R has them in stock. There are probably other players that can be hacked similarly.
If you want something on a very tight budget, you might try the Cyberhome 500 from a local Best Buy. They can be hacked via their own remotes from what I've heard.
