DVD player color setting?

574 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Havocsi
My DVD player has a selectable color resolution setting of 4:4:4 or 4:4:2. I have a Fujitsu P55/30 plasma and was wondering which to set it at and what this actually will do for PQ. Thanks...

Hello,

Is this player the Panasonic DVD-S97?

If so:

There is no "right", "wrong", or "should" with the setting. The Panasonic is going to allow for whatever setting is allowed for by the display.

First digit is luminance: Y.

Second digit R-Y. (Red)

Third digit B-Y. (Blue)

4:4:4 Color information is sampled at the same rate as luminance.

4:2:2 Color information is sampled at half the rate as the luminance.

4:4:4 would provide more color information and, in theory, it should be better.

4:4:4 is great for HD.

For a thorough explanation, try here:

With certain HDMI connections -- all three choices may be allowed. With a DVI connection only RGB will be allowed -- that's what DVI supports. If your connection allows for 4:4:4 then give it try, however given the color depth/sampling of present day DVD (4:2:0), it's probably overkill.

Thanks Paul. That's exactly what I was looking for.
You are limited by the encoding of the source DVD in any case, I think its 4:2:2, all the DVD player can do is interpolate to make it 4:4:4.
Paul Bigelow,

Maybe you can help me out. Today i set up a Toshiba SD-3960DVD player to my 37pd25ED panney plasma. I tried playing 2 good DVDS. The video picture and sound came on. however the picture was all pink on both DVDS. The manual wasn't much help. What could i be doing wrong? Thank You.

Good point. The manual does indicate that the 4:4:4 is processed...
DVD is YCbCr 4:2:0.

What comes out of the MPEG decoder is YCbCr 4:2:2.

To get RGB, the YCbCr is converted to RGB 4:4:4 for output.

Will try to. Check the video cable. I suspect that either at the TV or at the player the red and blue cables are switched or there's a poor connection.

Paul thanks for your reply.

I found out what i was doing wrong. I was supposed to set video out put to YUV since i am using component cables. The DVD player was preset to video output to CVBS causing the picture to be pink and distorted. See what happens when you don't read the whole darn manual. Thanks again.
When I set up my panasonic s97 I did not see blacker than black on 4:4:4 or RGB, only on 4:2:2 so that is what I am using.
