Which DVI-equipped DVD player should one get for Panny's 50LC13? I've been off the forum for a while, but it seems that until Panny (or anyone else) comes out with one, we are stuck with the Sammy HD931 or the Bravo D1, correct?

Have both been used successfully with the Panny 50LC13? Any preferences out there? I've heard of some compatibilty issues with the Sammy and certain monitors, due to HDCP issues. Seems like one can get the HD931 for around $250 now, and the D1 for $180. Is the Sammy worth the extra bucks for the build-quality? I've heard both sides as to which one has better PQ. Too bad the D1 doesn't come in silver.

Also, would you have the DVD player or the TV do the upconverting from 480p to 720p? Either way it will all be done in the digital domain with DVI, right? Anyone know which one has the better scaler?

Thanks,

Mike

(While I'm posting, has anyone had luck price-matching the 50LC13 in the Atlanta metro area?)

I have the same questions about a DVD player for the Panasonic LCD RPTV. I currently have an old non-progressive scan DVD player from 3+ years ago so I'm itching to upgrade it. However, from what I've been reading, both the D1 and 931 have their share of problems. Have most of the problems been ironed out yet? Are there any other reasonably priced DVI DVD players set to be released any time soon?

I started a a thread in the dvd forum and asked several questions but so far nobody can given me an answer I understand (it's me not them). Let me try here.

Ok the dvdi dvd players are best but which one works best with the Panny? Is it the Bravo?

What about hooking up hdtv via dvi connection? Is it better than component hookup(3 rca configured cables)? I was told that they both have the same PQ but that seems intuitively wrong to me? Are there any disadvantages of going from my Comcast cable box to tv via dvi?

And another option to remember (certainly not for everybody) is to run the DVI from an HTPC. This assumes that a person would have a good computer with a DVI out equipped video card. I'm looking to go this route because a decent DVD player and a good, cordless keyboard and mouse combo can be had for equal to, or less, than the cost of these DVD players. And, from everything I've read, provide superior picture quality.

DVI certainly shouldn't be a disadvantage (other than taking up your DVI slot that you may want another item to use), but should actually be an advantage. The signal is kept (in most cases (Sony???)), in the purely digital realm with no conversions to analog, which can introduce artifacts.

i've got the rca 50"dlp and married it to the sammy hd931, got it instead of bravo because i could return to best buy if did not like , hooked up by dvi, must say the dammy sammy is verrrry slow to load and respond to commands, anyone know why?? comcast dvi out on motorola 51oo box is not enabled so only way to use is by component/composite or svideo outs.

nothing else except maybe a htpc can use dvi right now.

That those are defects (normal, that is)....but also heard Bravo has some similar issues. I ordered the Bravo yesterday, but have been reading A LOT of messages about problems with the units locking up which is making me somewhat concerned. Still, I'm going to give it a try.

Yeah, I don't understand why it's so hard to make a DVI DVD player that can play normal discs properly? My 3+ year old, non-progressive scan Sony can play any disc I have without a hitch. So why can't a current-generation, top of the line (at least, within the company's line of DVD players) at least play discs properly? Is it that hard to do? Doesn't seem like adding a DVI output should affect disc-reading in any way?

I'm itching to throw some money at a DVD player with DVI, but all these problem threads really have me worried. I can't live with a DVD player that I havta constantly cross my fingers every time I wanna watch a movie in hopes that it'll play it properly.

I am also in hunt for dvi player for my Panny.

My analysis is that that existing DVI players have too many issues.

I'm waiting for more offerings, hopefully around Christmas time.

Will be using my non-progressive Pioneer 'til then.

I use my computer connected via DVI to watch dvds @720p on my PT50LC13 and the picture is incredible.

I think my Denon DVD1600 is going to collect dust now.:D

After reading reviews of DVI-equipped DVD players, I concluded they are simply not quite ready for prime time in terms of justifying their additional cost. So I purchased a Panny DVD-S35 (progressive scan, component inputs) for $90 minus a $20 rebate and have a beautiful, sharp picture that will do just fine on my 50LC13, at least until the DVI/DVD market settles down.

Ha, I did the same thing when I first bought my Panny. Great minds...huh?

I figured I would donate the S35 to my daughter's room once a newer better one is purchased. Haven't seen my damn rebate tho....hope the mailman didn't spend it.
