I haven't tried the LG unit, so sorry.
to your first question:
No, Upconvert DVD players WILL improve the picture dramaticly. Do not get a regular DVD if you have a HD TV. get an upconvert.
I would reccomed that you get an upconvert DVD player and a recorder. Use the recorder JUST for recording and the DVD player for watching. The reason is because the lazor that is inside all dvd players wear's out over time and by playing a DVD movie in a unit that can record would be hurting the lazor inside the unit!
Also, get a NAME BRAND, Please.
I like the following:
Samsung, sony, pioneer, panasonic, just to name a few.
hope this helps!

I have read that upconverting DVD players may or may not make a difference depending on your tv. Do stand-alone DVD players generally produce better pictures than recorders, or does it just depend on the unit itself? I bought the LG DR1F9H recorder recently, and was not blown away by the picture quality, but then again, maybe I was expecting too much. Discs look basically the same a they did on my old DVD player and old CRT TV. The picture is actually pretty good, but I was expecting more. Maybe I should not have. Most of the DVD's I own are older movies from the 70's and 80's, so maybe that is the problem. Star Wars, Episode III, for instance, looked much better than Episode VI. Based on my needs, should I get a cheap recorder that gets the job done and by a stand alone player, or does it matter? Has anyone tried the LG unit? Thanks. |
