So I got my 50phd7uy yesterday. HDTivo makes me weep...

I bought a temporary Sony progressive scan dvd player ($80) costco, as I wait for the Yamaha s2500 to come out.

My question is does everyone here use the settings on the dvd player? For example, the digital noise reduction, or the black level settings, as well as sharpness, etc..???

Or do you turn everything off and tweak on the plasma.

Leave the white, black, color and sharpness settings on the player in their factory defaults. If the player has a "picture mode" choice, pick the one that is described as doing the least to the image. However if that picture mode doesn't automatically turn off DNR in the player then I'd suggest you calibrate with DNR set to *OFF* and then play with it later to see if it gives you any advantage.

When calibrating, set your levels using the controls on the display. There's no particular reason why you couldn't use the controls in the player as well, but that just complicates things, and what you REALLY want to be sure of is that you have turned off any "torch mode" stuff that might be pre-set in the factory defaults for the display. By focussing on the display's controls during calibration you are most likely to do this.
