A 5 pack of Panasonic DVD-Ram is 12.99 after $7 mail in rebate. It's in their ad this week.

Not a bad deal, but I for one am fed up with rebates. I think retailers have taken the rebate thing waaay to far. I'm tired of making sure I obey all they little rules they require, designed just to set you up for failure so they can have an excuse to welch on the deal. I like the "no fuss" rebates that Costco and Stables have set up now and at least they're printing out the rebates at checkout (I remember trying to do the numbers matchup game at CompUSA rebate wall)....
I agree I am tired of this whole rebate thing, it seems everything has a rebate instead of just giving it to you for the correct price. I still have 2 more rebates in at the moment and one is from the company Soyo which I doubt I will ever see.
It's IMO just a way for the Big Box Companies to squeeze money out of you at the register when you think you are getting a great deal. Also its a way to make you keep a bad product that you are disappointed in and can't return, b/c after you sent in the UPC label.
I'm pretty sick of them too. I have started passing up some things if rebates are involved. But, I still have several rebates open from early December amounting to about $60. These were through OfficeMax. I had received two rejection cards saying that my rebates were invalid. I had photo copied all the paperwork, and I took them to the store manager at OfficeMax. He spent a good half-hour on the phone with the rebate center and then said they were legit and would be paid. He said if they weren't, I should bring them back to him, and he would pay them out of the till. I have been tracking them, and now two of them show checks issued on 2/24, and one is still pending. But, I will doing less of that in the future.
I read an article in a magazine awhile back. Surprisingly enough, somewhere around 70% of people who buy "rebated" items do not send in the rebate form. That is why almost all the good deals at B&M stores include rebates....Basically they get the average bafoon to see the price on the shelf and in small print there are 4-5 rebates, so people believe they are getting a great deal based on the shelf tag...even when it rings up twice as much at the register ;)

Allen, I too have had issues with OfficeMax. My local manager is scared of me by now :)!. I have made multiple purchases there on a DVD Burner and a Hard Drive. Both of them came back rejected, because they said the date was invalid on the purchase (it was clearly NOT). I had to go speak with the manager personally, and I bitched at him....About 2 weeks later, I had 2 pretty checks in my mailbox.

I'm never done another rebate after that fiasco. Usually you can get better deals online from NewEgg or a reputable eBay seller. It's just not worth the hassle IMO.

I havent had issues with offiemax other than its taken 4 months both times to get my money back. Ive done everything I can with my one for Soyo but dont expect to get it. Do a google of Soyo and you will see what I mean.

I recently bought an Adaptec 4 port PCI USB-2 card for under $10.00. I sort of doubt you can do that through anyone who has to mail something to you.
I now look for the best deal without rebates! I think that they (retailers) should have to (by law) give you two options:

#1 Instant rebate or gift card for a lesser amount at register (no mail-in crap to deal with)

#2 Mail-in rebate for more $$$

Now they should be bound by law to complete the rebate process and have a check to you within 30 days. There is NO reason that a rebate should take 8-12 weeks!!! They try to wear you down and hope you'll just forget by that time.

I went through that crap last year with BenQ. They mysteriously "found" my rebate info after I reminded them that I sent it in registered mail with signature required & had proof of receipt!

I've also heard that in other countries like Germany, it is illegal to have a mail-in rebate. It has to be given at the time of purchase.

You want to make a law that keeps people from making the decision they want to make to get the best deal possible? You must be a politician! :D

Seriously, you are not going to get the same deals with the above two options as you'd get with a MIR (because they aren't going to give the same deal with a 100% participation option).

Yes there are some risks, but the directions are not that hard to follow. I track rebates rather carefully (I make PDF's of the submissions and mark them paid when the check arrives) and I've only had one rebate turned down (and that was Symantec which claimed I'd already applied for that particular rebate when I had not).

If you don't like the hassle of a MIR, don't buy stuff that has MIRs. Preventing others from doing so makes know sense at all.
