My sincere apologies if this has been answered before, but after scanning through many pages of search results, I was unable to find an answer to this (probably common) question.

I just got a Samsung (upconverting) DVD player (HD941) which has the following audio-out jacks:

Digital/Optical

Digital/Coaxial

5.1CH analog

My stereo receiver also has all three of these as inputs.

I understand that if I want to play DVD-A and SACD discs I need to use the 5.1 CH Analog outputs. However, since 99% of the time I will only be using the DVD player to watch DVDs, which of these 3 audio options "should" I use?

If there is a simple answer, that's fine. (The detailed answers are fun, too).

Thanks!

Connect up both the Digital & 5.1CH, run the same passage from a dvd through your receiver to see which sounds better. If the DACs in the player provide better 5.1CH then use that otherwise use the Digital in the receiver.

I've got everything connected - 2CH for CD/5.1CH for DVD,DVD-A,SACD/Digital for DVD so I can swap between them as I feel.

Thanks, all. Prior to getthing these replies, I sort of came to the same conclusion myself. But it's nice to get some confirmation.

I may be imagining things, but it really seems like this "upcoding" DVD player looks significantly better on my HD Plasma TV.
