Not much of an expert. This may be a basic question but here it is

Playing DVD audio on Sony Player. On dvd player 5.1 sound is selected. If I select stereo on receiver is sound any different that selecting stereo on both. What device is indeed decoding the signal. Does it really matter what audio option I select on player if ultimately signal goes through receiver?
When playing music I prefer stereo. Does it matter is default on DVD player is for SACD 5.1 layer if I select stereo on receiver??

It is confusing. I have an ONKYO NR709

Have you tried selecting stereo on the player AND stereo on the receiver?

Did you notice a difference vs your first settings?

What is the source format? If stereo, it makes no difference. If the source is 5.1, it may matter depending on how each device handles downmixing.
