I'm running Ubuntu and have discovered that xine has a problem with dual-layer DVDs (at least on my machine). I've installed DVD::Rip but find that it is really intended for backing up to CDs and so, creates files that are not really playable from the HDD.

Does anyone know of a program that will rip a DVD to a disk image or something else that xine, mplayer or VLC can recognize and playback?

Thanks.

The simplest way is probably to create an image with dd:

dd if=/dev/dvd of=foo.img

That should then play nicely with e.g. "xine -pfhq dvd:/path/to/foo.img"

Hope that helps!
