Some DVD-ROM drives have a Play/Skip button on the front panel. How does this work?

Say I open Windows Media Player (WMP) with a CD in the drive. If I press this button, will the CD start to play? Will WMP show the CD playing?

Say I start a CD playing with WMP, then press this button, will it skip to the next track?

If I don't have any CD playing software running, and I press this button, will the CD start to play without any software?

I'm trying to add Audio CD support to my HTPC, and the more headless I can make it the better, as firing up the projector to play an audio cd is a tad silly. Thanks!
