I have just installed a Samsung SIR-T165 to test the OTA signal in our new place. I am picking up all the DTV and HDTV signals without problems, but it would not display video from DVD player. As soon as I switch video source to DVD, I get a snowy screen with no picture at all.

Right now the 165 is connected to a Dell 19" computer LCD screen through DVI as well as RGB. The DVD is connected to the 165 via component wires.

Is there something I am not doing correctly?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you have the DVD in progressive 480p or Standard 480I? I have the same receiver and have no problem with DVD. Make sure you are running component In and not putting it into component out by mistake.

I don't have any problems, everything comes out looking great. I have it hooked up all component cable, dvi cable is not option since my TV doesn't have DVI and besides what's up with the cost of these DVI cables.

Still I am not seeing any video quality increase of dvd played through the samsung t165 hdtv receiver or running dvd player component directly to TV.

Should we see better dvd playback if running through the samsung t165 since supposedly upconverting the video to higher standard??? right.?

Thanks for the responses.

The DVD player is at 480i, unless if it detected the Samsung being 480p capable and switched over. I have no way of finding out since the setting on DVD player is on screen, and I couldn't get it to display anything.

The problem is strange that all inputs: DVD, AV1 and AV2 all have snowy picture, eventhough nothing is connected to AV1 and AV2. I tried connecting the DVD player via composite video cable, samething. I'm beginning to wonder if this has something to do with the copy protection feature of the 165, which only happens when display is connected through DVI or RGB.

I have to use DVI for now because I am using the computer LCD to test OTA signal while waiting for the plasma screen.

Any more help is greatly appreciated. I am stumped.

Can the 165 convert component to rgb or dvi? I'm not an expert on this model, but maybe it can only output the same as an input (svideo in - svidoe out, etc)? dunno, a thought though

yes, the 165 upconverts any 480i or 480p signal fed into it on the composite, S, or component inputs to the rez set on the output rez switch on the back. I have mine set to 720p for my Sony HS10 and I hooked a gamecube among other things to the various inputs of the 165 and it scaled it to the 720p rez -- pretty cool built in scalar.

Steph280, Sometimes, DVD players have a switch for what outputs are active. I have an old pioneer that has a switch on the back to select component out or S-Vid/Composite -- just a thought.

I'm fairly certain it's not the DVD player, since I tried hooking up an old VCR to AV1 and got the same result. In fact, the same snowy screen is there even if nothing is connected.

While playing around with it last night, I noticed when I switch from OTA broadcast to DVD input, I can see the DVD screen perfectly for fraction of a second, and then it immediately goes to the snowy screen. This leads me to believe there is something going on with the box.

What exactly does HDCP do to protect content? Since I am connecting via DVI cable to a computer LCD screen, which I believe is seen as a "unauthorized" HDCP device. Could this snowy screen be the result of HDCP scrambling the signal? I wish I have a component input TV I can test with, but right now I am limited to using this LCD computer screen.

Thanks again for all the help.

If I recall the Samsung 165 will not change the component in (dvd) to RGB at all. I think it is called "transcoding." I'm not sure about DVI, it should be in the instructions.....try changing the switch on the back from RGB to DVI.

Yes the switch is set to DVI right now.

I actually tried analog through RGB cable as well, doesn't work there either.

I don't think it's conversion issue, since this is happening even with NOTHING connected to the back. I found some thread over on the plasma forum where people experienced similar problem but on Panasonic plasma and other STB. And there is mention of DVI sync problems.

Thanks again for the help.

I did read something about that, but I thought it was directed at connecting a DVHS unit.

That answers everything. Thanks!

I had a similar problem when my DVD player was set to progressive. Selecting interlaced fixed the problem.

I'm not sure if the T-165 is up-converting the interlaced input or not, but I can view the picture at least.
