I have a Sony Vaio PCG-C1Xs (Picturebook) PC. This is an older PC with wide screen LCD (1024x480). The system currently has 64mb, PII-400, 12GB HD, and is running Windows 98.

I would like to use this to view movies while traveling. My main question is, what type of video encoding/compression would get me the most bang for the buck on a lower end PC? The video chipset is made by NeoMagic (256AV) with 2.5mb of RAM. It supposedly has some type of DVD hardware acceleration, but I don't know if that is applicable once the video is changed to another format.

I have several movies ripped onto my main desktop, but I'm not sure how to encode from here. I'm willing to experiment, but I was looking for some general pointers from those who are more familiar with the process.

MPEG-1 (i.e. VCD), SVCD, DivX, WM9, something else?

Thanks,

jonnyb
