DVDA wont play with my Cambridge 540D?

Hello, I have a Cambridge 540D hooked up to an old Arcam AV50 receiver in 5.1 analog.

Last night I bought my first DVDA because in theory my 540D is supposed to play these. The DVDA I bought is Lyle Lovett Joshua... I tried just about every settings on my 540R menu but nothing came out. I also realized on the DVD pocket that it says DT 5.1 compatible DVD players. Since the 540D does not decode DTS, could this be the problem? If so then I'm doomed, what is the solution, I need a receiver that decodes DTS and feed it through the digital coax instead of the 5.1 analog cables?

Sorry if my question is basic but I'm a little lost with all this stuff. I'm basically a person who likes to listen to quality sound music so I was really eager to ear this DVDA compared to the same CD I have from Lyle!

Thanks.

I believe the problem is the disc is NOT a DVD-Audio disc, but rather a DTS CD. These were originally packaged like CDs but they switch to DVD-A style boxes (causing much confusion). Look very carefully on the package. If it does NOT say anywhere on the package that it is a DVD-A (giveaway would be a note about about ADVANCED RESOLUTION SURROUND and/or ADVANCED RESOLUTION STEREO, along with something saying such programmes require a DVD-A player). The only copy I could find online is a DTS CD. To play that back, you have to turn the DTS output ON in your player AND have a receiver/pre-pro that can decode DTS from a digital source. I'm not familiar with your receiver but if it can't decode DTS, then I'm afraid you are out of luck.

FWIW, the DTS CD would give you a MCH mix, but it would NOT be high resolution-not even as high as the CD.

Thanks Ovation. I think you may be right but I'll have to check on the box tonight...

I bought this DVD because I saw it mentionned several times by "professional" reviewers in magazines. They used it as a "reference" to evaluation sound quality. Since I like Lyle Lovett, I was happy to get a new level of sound quality from regular CD. My current receiver (Arcam AV50) does not decode anything that is digital. It is only a Dolby Pro Logic receiver so I use the decoder in the 540D and this decoder is not rated as being DTS...

So bottom line if I was idiot enough to buy a DTS CD when I can't decode DTS then too bad for me! haha
I have the 540D. It will pass a DTS signal out to a receiver/pre-pro, but it won't decode it internally. Many players say DTS capable on the box, but that often means it can pass a DTS signal out, not that it can decode DTS internally.
Ovation, I knew the 540D did not decode DTS, I was just too stupid to read the Lyle Lovett box correctly at the store so I bought a DTS-CD instead of buying a real DVDA!!!

How well, everybody has to learn someday!

I'll probably return it for now and buy it back when I finally have a descent receiver that can decode DTS...

Cheers.
Who lets you return opened titles that are not defective?
CCarncross, you are right, I can't return it anymore, I forgot the store changed it's policy in 2004. Before 2004, they were taking back CDs if you did not like it but they changed that policy because there was too many people copying the CDs and then returning them.

Well, I'm stuck with it then until I buy a new receiver that will decode it.
Wow, if they just adjusted their return policy in 2004, I bet there were tons of people copying and returning. Good they wised up and corrected it. Sorry to hear you accidentally picked up an uplayable for you title. Look on the bright side, it will motivate you to get a new receiver faster..
