The 24 pin allows for tranmission of analog video along with the digital video and was used in some PC's and monitors which wanted to use a DVI connection without initially using a Digital signal. It is called DVI-I for integrated as compared to DVI-D for digital only. Some DVI-D connectors will not allow a DVI-I cable to be connected as the hole for the extra pins are filled in.

Not really.

DVD-D can be 18 pin (single link) or 24 pin (double-link). DVI-I is also called 28 pin because of the 4 additional pins for the analog video.

Hope it helps.
