I know I might be getting a little ahead of myself, but with the big three showing off their consoles within the next couple of months. Do you think that they will have at least DVI connections? I know Nintendo announced that their system will hook up with VGA, but I will prefer a DVI connection. Also I hope that all games will at least support 720p. Any insights to this is appreciated, thank you. :)

:)
:D :D

Aside from Nintendo, I would imagine both the PS3 and XBox2 to have component and HDMI out for game HD. I would imagine HDMI will be required for use of BluRay/HD-DVD output. If you don't have HDMI / DVI input on your TV, they will probably also downsample movies to 480i for output via the other connectors.

I wouldn't mind VGA from Nintendo, but I would rather have HDMI.

HDMI isn't needed for HD output, only to keep the signal all digital.

HDMI all the way for next carrying audio and video. By the time we need them for those system, switchers won't be too much an issue in cost and availability like they are today.

I love the rip on Nintendo btw. Some of their decisions lately are so infuriating.

HDMI (or DVI with HDCP - which should be going away) is required to encrypt the content. Encryption will be required before the studios will allow the boxes to play HD movie content. That's why I said that component is only going to be useful for HD game content.

Either way, the boxes will probably STILL only come with composite cables by default. :(

Gefen is also releasing a 4x1 HDMI switcher within the next month which I would recommend waiting for. This is because its quite possible that all 3 next generation consoles will have HDMI outputs. The 4x1 HDMI switcher will be $350 and the 2x1 HDMI switcher will be $250. The currently sold 2x1 HDMI switcher can be seen here . These are currently the best HDMI switchers available and part of their cost is that they amplify the signal. As such you should not have trouble connecting them to a source up to 50 feet away using good HDMI cable.

IMHO what will probably happen is each system will be available with RF outputs as the default cabling, what comes with the core system. You'd be able to purchase the HD cabling connectors and accessories independently. Just like most of us have done for Xbox.
