Hello All

I guess DVi is not plug and play but is it seriously hard to get a good picture?

I have a Denon A11/5900 connected to my Hitachi 32PD5200 via DVi and Componant and to be honest the componant is miles better.

But I guess I might need to do some work to get DVi near the quality of the Componant input. At this time I set the A11 to 1080 and the Screen to PC input (the other option being STB Set top box I guess). Symptoms are a severe inability to handle very dark scenes and blacks, lots of pixelation and non blacks visible. Light scenes are not a problem and generally look good. This is using the DVE disk to set the basics using the Componant input should I need to recalibrate the DVi input or are the settings common to all?

Am I correct in setting the DVi output to 1080 I understand all PAL DVD's output 525 with this mismatch cause problems?

You do have to recalibrate for DVI. The settings you found with DVE for Component are almost certain to be wrong for DVI.

However, I suspect your problem is something else. If you have set your DVI input to "PC" standards then you may very well have just set it to clip off all the "Blacker than Black" data -- which would yield the dark detail problems you describe. Try the "STB" setting, and recalibrate specifically for DVI with your DVE disc.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the quick reply. As soon as I can book a session with my new toys I will give your suggestion a go :) (It's harder than ever to tear my mom away from the TV she really loves Plasma screens now)

Just to let you know Bob your suggestion was spot on set the DVi to STB and all was perfect still can't tell if DVi is better than Componant Progressive scan though.

Glad to hear it AndyLee!

Check some resolution, sharpness, and color frequency response screens on you calibration DVD and I suspect you'll see a difference between Component and DVI that favors DVI. Seeing it in real movies might be tougher. You might also discover that the amount of overscan (image loss at the sides of the screen) is better in DVI.

On the other hand, some players and displays provide more limited controls if you are using DVI -- zoom modes for example. So that may argue for sticking with Component in your setup.

In any case, at least you have a choice now.
