My new Comcast DVR (Motorola) came yesterday. A friend has one of these and assured me that it was not HDCP compliant. However, the Motorola protests since the SX21 is not HDCP compliant. Bummer. The install guy didn't even know what DVI is, so he was of no use.

The PQ for HD channels using the component cable connection is very good. Even lettering is crisp and clear. So perhaps I should not worry about DVI. However, the fact that I have a feature that is going unused is bugging me, so I want to research my options.

My PC also sends out DVI (non-HDCP), which works fine. Thus, worst case scenario, I could simply dedicate the DVI connection to the PC, and let the Motorola communicate via the component cables (analog).

However, I wonder if there is a DVI switcher that would allow me to switch betwen the Motorola DVR and the PC, and also remove HDCP from the equation?

It also seems that DVI has a very limited future, so perhaps I should not invest in any more DVI hardware.

Your thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated.

I fell into your same boat a few months ago when VOOM activated the HDCP flag and I was SOL for a digital connection to my SX-21. Component is good enough for me for now, or until they somehow manage to shutoff analogue HD access. I have an HTPC with MyHD which I use to view and record OTA HD. I also use it with TheaterTek DVD to view DVDs. I have that connected to the PC1 input. And I have a Bravo D1 connected to the PC3/DVI input. I believe the Bravo D2 is also non HDCP compliant so that might work for you. Either way, I'm afraid we'll be both in for an expensive upgrade when HD-DVD or Blue Ray hit the market. Still hoping that maybe some sort of fix might be possible to make our pjs compliant. Most people here say, "Don't hold your breath" though.

I don't think you can get around HDCP doing that. Some have had luck inserting a box like the Lumagen, HD Leeza, or similar processor in between the HDCP source and the non HDCP compliant display device.

Contact AVS member, Kei Clark, at Digital Connections. She has a relatively cheap solution. www.digital connection.com

Be forewarned. DVI has a significant advantage over component when DVD is the source, but not so with HD Sat/Cable. I am not sure that there is any improvement at all. I don't know why.
