DVI to Component Adaptor for 9000 Pro

I know this issue of the ATI DVI to component adaptor has been beat to death but searching has not yielded an answer to this question.

All the DVI-I to Component HDTV YPbPr adaptors that I see on Ebay list the compatable ATI cards but they do not list my Radeon 9000 Pro.

Why not and will it work with my 9000 Pro?

The 9000 Pro has a DVI-I connector on it next to the VGA connector and looks identical to the pictures on ATI's website of the DVI connector on the RADEONâ„¢ 9800, RADEONâ„¢ 9700, RADEONâ„¢ 9600, RADEONâ„¢ 9500, RADEONâ„¢ 8500 Series cards.

I don't want to have to buy another card if the one I have will work with that $7 part.

Thanks

That's because they are not compatable for the 9000. The 9000 does not have the circuitry needed for component output. The dongle is basically just switches and wires connected to RCA jacks for the component cables.

Your only alternative is a transcoder, which can run $150 to $200.

It might be cheaper to look for something like a 9500/9600 and a dongle. Keep in mind though that control is limited through the dongle over a transcoder.

Can you explain?

With the dongle, resolutions are limited to whatever is supported by the drivers. Also, for DVD playback, macrovision restrictions are enforced unless you use something like AnyDVD.

For a transcoder since you are using VGA output, you generally have much more flexibility in the resolutions you can define and there are no Macrovision restrictions.
