Just video. The DVI cable does not have the wiring to pass audio.

There is no conversion so there is zero difference. DVI is a subset of HDMI. You could also use a cable that is DVI on one end and HDMI on the other if you are worried about the extra connection. In any case, you can probably find a solution less expensive than Monster. Any brand cable at any price will work as well in lengths under 15 ft. Cable quality for carrying the DVI/HDMI only comes into play for longer runs as it's a digital signal.

Greywolf,

So are you saying that DVI/HDMI over 15 ft. should NOT be considered? Here is my dilemma. I have to run about a 40' DVI to HDMI cable up, over, and down. Should I reconsider this by using component cables? This is going from a HTPC to a Toshiba DLP, where the rack is not on the same wall as the DLP. I get a great picture running homemade 40' component cables, but now concerned about connecting the HTPC.

Thanks,

DVI/HDMI can start to lose pixels with lengths much over 15ft. That's when cable quality starts to get important. While some people report fine results at 50' with high quality, all copper cables, others maintain that expensive conversion from copper to optical and back to copper is required for such lengths. A search of the forum will locate more information.

Component cables with solid copper center conductors will handle such distances with ease and the end user can easily terminate component cables as opposed to DVI/HDMI. The only fly in the ointment is the possibility of downrezzing HD to SD on protected programming sometime in the future. This may never happen though as an affordable recorder that can record HD from a component input may never be built and there would be no reason to downrez the signal.

I have read good reports on Ram cables and they are a forum supporter and sponsor. If I was looking for 40' cables I would consider them.
