Will it be necessary to have a DVI input on projectors to display future HDTV Digital Satellite or D. Cable broadcasts? I've heard that possibly future DirecTV set top boxes will decode a copy protected HD signal and and at least provide an analog (component) output to display the full HD signal on devices that do not have the DVI input. Is this true? Or will the HD analog conversion be down-converted to 480P?

We're burnt out on this topic, please search the archives under "HDCP" and "DVI" to read the past discussions.

The short version is the inclusion of a DVI input means nothing whatsoever in terms of future HDTV compatibility - strong encryption has to be used on the unprotected digital interface between settop box and projector to meet the HDCP requirements.

Beyond the copy protection issue, the short range of 8' maximum for the DVI interface makes it unsuitable for most ceiling-mounted projectors, although I suppose you could make it work in a floor-mounted application.

No existing projectors with DVI can hope for compatibility with HDCP - nor any yet announced. Check back in three years.

The Proxima DP8000 has been announced and has support for DVI with HDCP.
