Im in the earliest stages (starting today) of building my very own DVR and would like to know what sort of OSs are out there that are any good. Ive looked into MythTV a bit (Mythbuntu) but thats all. Are there any other good ones out there? What I really need it to do is

1) be easy to set up

2) be able to record more than one channel at a time (2 at the least)

3) play back on two separate TVs (one HD and one right now SD)

4) preferably *nix for the for the low low price of $0

Thats it. Everything else is gravy

I think a lot of people (myself included) find your #1 request, and *nix to be mutually exclusive of one another. FWIW, I use SageTV (works with any OS) to be robust, reliable, easier than *nix to setup, and will satisfy all your requirements, except the 'free' part.

I should have qualified #1 with saying that Im a computer guy and it took me all of 30 minutes to set up Ubuntu. I guess "easy" is a relative term.

First it would help to know what dual tuner tuner card you have or plan to get so that you can record two programs conurrently

Second I am not aware of any way to play two different TV programs concurently on two differnt TVs/monitors concurently with a PC.

I havent even gotten to the point of selecting hardware. I am just looking into the possibility of some OS working as I need it to.

do yourself a favor, spend the money on win7. Try the RC if you have dobts, but the dvr in media center is top notch.

Win7, eh? Interesting. I had Vista on my laptop and it was garbage so I did the Win7 upgrade and it was equally as bad. It could have been all of the bloatware that came with my laptop slowing it down though, I didnt wipe it between.

try it.

i've had my vista machine running 24/7 non stop for months, never missed a recording. only rebooted after software install, never becuase of slow down.

i upgraded to win7 for qam support is its been equally as stable.

I have to agree WMC7 is excellent. Only a couple of drawbacks concerning DRM and of course the cost. It records when it's supposed to, video quality is excellent, easy to setup, works "out of the box".

MythTV is MUCH more difficult to set up than ubuntu IMHO. Ubuntu is pretty much plug and play if you have Linux compatible hardware. I love ubuntu for my desktop, but my HTPC runs W7.

There's your problem

I have Vista 64bit on my fast, multi-core desktop and Win7 on my older, slower, single-core laptop and they both run (UI-wise) at about the same speed. Do a fresh install and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I hated Vista as well but have been very happy with the Win7 RC. 7's Media Center is definitely worth a look.

Take a look at GBPVR it runs on windows it is pretty easy to setup. It should do almost everything you want and maybe more. There is a very good forum of very helpful people. I have been running it for about 2 years.

I'm using SageTV on Ubuntu 9.04. Works great, and there's a good support forum for it at sagetv.com. If you're comfortable with linux, I'd go for it.
