Dynamic control is a compression option. This is designed for use in small apartments or for late-night viewing, when you want to run the overall volume low, but still be able to hear dialog. It has the effect of lowering the volume for loud effects and raising the volume for very quiet dialog.

In short, it destroys the dynamic range of the soundtrack. Personally, I would prefer that it not even be present in the player....but I'm type A+ in the audio realm.

thank you, so you have dynamic range off then?
At night when you crank the volume up to hear the dialog, the loud BOOM ahead isn't so loud. Rather it stays at the same volume as the dialog. Think of it as a way of steadying the volume.

It works well at night time, but I still hate the complete loss of dynamic range. I'm happier having a quick thumb for the volume controls at night than turning the dynamic range control on.

But it is handy if your next door neighbors are only 1/4" away.
