but WHICH version of E.T....?

The original classic, or the politically correct, (Walkie talkies, "hippy") CGI tweaked E.T. that might have looked kickass 5 years ago but now looks ridiculous. (I just watched last week after reading the "summer of 1982" series on AICN. They should have left E.T. a puppet, once they CGI'd the looney tunes like expressions on him... ugh. Also a slap in the face to the fabulous work of Carlo Rambaldi. Wow, E.T was such a great creation that will digitally superimpose new more realistic (whatever the hell THAT means) expressions on him for 50% of the film!

So both versions? Or which...?

Saying E.T. is a HD DVD exclusive is like saying Star Wars is a BD exclusive. Technically correct, but pointless to mention until something actually gets released.

It may be a while before we see any Spielberg on HD DVD... and E.T. will be one of the last ones to make an appearance. Universal will likely start with some lower-tier stuff (1941, Duel, Always, Sugarland Express) before moving on to bigger stuff. Even then, I expect to see Jaws and Jurassic Park long before E.T.

As for "which version", I assume we'd get both, as was done on standard DVD. But we'll just have to wait and see...

I predict E.T. will be released on HD DVD by the end of the year. It is the 25th Aniversary of the film and I'm sure Universal will have a major announcement of the film being re-issued on DVD and first time HD DVD release.

Jurassic Park in HD DVD with TRUHD would work for me.

Don't the big shot directors have more say over what happens to the really big titles over some other director and his movie on the level of Crank?

Lucas and Star Wars

Jackson and Lord of the Rings

Spielberg and E.T., Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan

I don't know anything about the internal politics of movie studios and their relations to directors, but can someone as powerful as Spielberg pull enough strings at Universal and say something like "I Want E.T. on HD DVD now, but don't release Schindler's List until this format war thing is over"

It really would be interesting to hear what some of the big directors have to say about each format

Even though it hasn't been announced

Schindler's List = Distributed by Universal = HD DVD

ET is Universal all the way, but expect it in a couple years (if HD-DVD is still even around)

I imagine that this depends on each individual director, studio, and contract... but yes, I believe if Spielberg asks Universal to jump, they're immediately faxing him a memo asking where, when, and how high.

That being said, I'd suspect that Spielberg (and Lucas) have a similar, logical approach to this that would also mirror the studios approach. Putting out something like Star Wars (or E.T.) at a time when a 'hit' title is selling less than 100,000 copies and most titles are only selling a few thousand doesn't make much sense.

Both the studios and directors are likely willing to hold back for greater penetration and a "bigger" HD release.

I don't believe Spielberg has spoken publically about his thoughts on HD DVD. (Which, in itself, shows how little this matters to most people at this point.) I think the assumption is that he's holding back, since we haven't even heard rumors of any of his titles. But, even if he's gun shy at this point, some of his stuff will likely come out. Warner released The Color Purple on standard DVD *very* early in the game.
