With companies from both camps involved, any thoughts on which format this one will appear on?

That being said, I'd suspect that Spielberg (and Lucas) have a similar, logical approach to this that would also mirror the studios approach. Putting out something like Star Wars (or E.T.) at a time when a 'hit' title is selling less than 100,000 copies and most titles are only selling a few thousand doesn't make much sense.
Both the studios and directors are likely willing to hold back for greater penetration and a "bigger" HD release.

I predict E.T. will be released on HD DVD by the end of the year. It is the 25th Aniversary of the film and I'm sure Universal will have a major announcement of the film being re-issued on DVD and first time HD DVD release.
