OK, so I love the E100. I've done the following with success so far:

-Imported DV from Sony camcorder to HDD at XP, named the various DV chapters or segments, shortened some, divided some and renamed then burned to -R at XP and at FR

-Transferred "Re-Animator, 10th Anniversary Edition" LD via S-Video in SP and titled the disc and burned at SP to -R

-Archived to HDD from Tivo at SP, then titled shows and disc and burned at SP

What confuses me is the difference between the Direct Navigator where I do my edits of DV captures, the Playlist where I create a playlist and the Dub to Disc where I make new Programs. Things are pretty much working the way I expected, discs finalize and play great in my Sony DVP-S7700.

Q: I need some clarity around why I would make playlists instead of programs in the dub menu?

Q: When I choose what to display first, Title or First Scene, I'm not sure of the difference...I guess I need to make a Title segment that is really short to display there?

Q: In all the little 'scene' (?) windows on the DVD-R isn't there a way to choose an image or frame to be displayed there?

Q: When I transfer a Laser Disk to HDD, then dub to -R, I want to separate the LD segments into chapters or segments or whatever you want to call them. I'm not clear on how to do that, I suppose it would be by dividing right? Then how do I choose the frame I want to show up in the title?

Excited but confused.....thanks for any input

Congrats on your E100, I have the E80. I can answer some for you.

The Playlist and it's editing of programs does not alter the original program material permanently, it's still all there on the harddrive. With Navigator, you are editing the original program file permanently.

Dividing in Navigator creates separate titleable chapters. I think you can you can do it in Playlist too, but again, Playlist does not alter your original program file permamently.

I don't know about thumbnails, don't have that feature on the E80, but want it.

You can do programs in two ways. Either divide a progam into multiple programs or use the stop and record buttons to initiate new programs. Unless you are very adept with pausing the source video and cueing it up for the next record session, you should avoid recommendation #2.

Are you refering to Menu or Program first play, vice what you said?

There is a separate page to pick the thumbnail of each program. It allows you to pick a still even 5 minutes into the program. Just press play and pause.

Let's assume you are recording in dvd compatible mode, otherwise what you want to do is not possible. Use the marker button to set your chapter marks. Each program will be dubbed to dvd-r with this chapter mark.

Alternatively you can create a playlist from the HDD program. On the dvd-r, play will begin at the start of the first scene, and not the start of the program. A playlist combines the features of shortening segments and marking, without modifying an original program. Every scene you specify has a start point and an end point. You can place the scenes just about anywhere (without overlap), and by not placing a scene over a commercial, you have effectively hidden the commercial from the high speed dubbing process. ONLY those scenes in the playlist get dubbed to the dvd-r, and nothing else. I have found this useful in transferring the Perfect 10 vhs video to HDD and then dvd-r. The scenes include only the pretty girls and not the silly comedian/commentator and his banter. The start of each scene is a chapter point on the dvd-r.

If you choose to divide the program, and therefore create multiple titles on the dvd-r, do it on a black frame. If you have no black frame, don't divide the program. It is too risky. Division is handy for cartoons, because you can generate a thumbnail for each title. Division, however, messes up your time codes, which reset to zero on each new title.

According to Toshiba, their D-R1 is the only recorder which allows you to create thumbnails for each chapter in a title. Panasonic does not offer this feature.

I bought a 25-pack of FujiFilm DVD-Rs at Best Buy...that's all I have tried, but have had no problem as yet with 6 DVDs burned- 4 in SP and 2 in XP. I did use the DVD-RAM that came with the box for some direct record to RAM from the DV camcorder also- works great.

Now get that E100 out of its box and get cracking! :D

I will still like to see an answer to pwscott's initial question regarding playlists. As a E80H newbie I am still unclear why I would use playlists. A typical scenario for me will be to record 4, half hour TV programs to the HDD, removing the commercials using Shorten Segment and then dubbing them to a DVD-R disk. I just choose the 4 programs from the HDD menu when I am dubbing. What do I gain by using Playlists? At this point I am just happy to have a permanent copy. I don't see any need to have markers or chapters in an episode of a sitcom or am I missing something?

Thanks for any help.

I just picked up my E100H over the weekend and I too am puzzled with the use of the playlist feature. Unfortunately the manual is pretty skimpy on its use and I'm just hoping someone could put it in layman terms. Although its been only 4 days since I got it, I just simply love the device and is now searching the net for someone to have found a way to replace the 80GB drive with a 250GB drive.

For the uses you are describing I don't see much point in using playlists.

When I had an E20 I used playlists to add a black lead-in and lead-out to a recording on -RAM. It made it easier to record to DVD-R in FR mode (you had to set a timer to do this with the E20, and the extra black before and after made timing less critical.)

Playlists let you create programs which consist of small portions of a recording, without any damage to the original. They also let you rearrange pieces of one or more recordings.

I've used playlists to make short video clips for use during planetarium shows. Each playlist is directly accessible via the disk navigation menu when dubbed to DVD-R and finalized.

Ollie, I tried burning a playlist last nite to dvd-r and it still put the markers at every 5 minutes vs at the scene starts like you stated. Are you sure about this or did I do something wrong. I got a message that said high speed burning was not allowed for playlists. And I thought high speed burning was how you preserved markers on a program? The program was recorded at XP and I burned it at XP also.

Thanks

Keep in mind that you cannot do a high-speed dub if you are dubbing a playlist. This means some quality may be lost due to re-encoding. I find it better to use the shorten segment function instead of playlists, but this does not allow you to change the order of the scenes in the HDD recording. Not a big deal for archiving programs and 8mm camcorder tapes.

I think Playlist was added primarily as a playback feature. So you could customize a program to watch it that way and not alter the original with deletions and editing.

It's not very valuable to me for recording, since I like highest quality, hi-speed dubbing with custom markers in movies and Playlist doesn't offer these when recording a Playlist to DVD-R. Also I don't rememeber a title option in Playlist, I'd want that if recording them.

I've only had my E-80 for a few weeks now, but so far I've used the TDK 20 pack spindle, TDK 10 pk w/case, TDK Armor Plated 10 pk, and the Panasonic DVD-RAM 3 pk.

With about 35 discs burned so far, I haven't had a problem with any of them. Unlike S-VHS tapes, (some priced as high as 15 bucks ea.), all have been perfect.

Long live DVD. :)
