xbox.com info:

troubleshooting tips:
  1. Turn off your console, and then disconnect and reconnect all the cables. Turn on the console again.
  2. If you have an Xbox 360 Hard Drive attached to your console, follow these steps:
    1. Turn off your console, and then remove the hard drive.
    2. Turn on your console again to see whether you still receive the error message.
    3. If you do not receive the error, turn off your console, and then reattach the hard drive.
    4. Turn on the console again.
Note You may have to try this procedure more than one time to make sure that you only receive the error message when the hard drive is attached.
  3. If you have an Xbox Memory Unit (MU) inserted into your console, follow these steps:
    1. Turn off your console, and then remove the MU.
    2. Turn on your console again to see whether you still receive the error message.
    3. If you do not receive the error message, turn off the console, and then reinsert the MU.
    4. Turn on the console again.
Note You may have to try this procedure more than one time to make sure that you only receive the error message when an MU is inserted.
  4. If you continue to experience this issue, contact Xbox Customer Service. Note If the agent cannot help you resolve this issue, you must return the console to Microsoft for repair.

if you do the above procedure and it still fails, call (800) 4 MY XBOX and tell them you get an E76 error. E66 are not covered under warranty. E76 are. Well do this if you want a free repair (hoping the repair tech doesnt make a big stink about it). if not and you tell them its an E66 its most likely a $100 fix (as most of the are).

btw you can also report the "E76 error" thru this link to xbox.com
http://support.xbox.com/support/en/u...px?step=repair

although you'd have to have a windows live id link to your gamertag.

this is what you've probably seen online about a modded 360
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/...EZylAPOKEz.php

has to do with a modded dvd drive. as yours hasnt been modded it seems like it may be a possible hdd read error.

you COULD format your hdd, but you would have to backup all your information (to a memory unit or a secondary hdd) via the xbox.com procedure:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/906502

but i'd try the above for a free fix first. also while they're (xbox) on the phone ask them for a shipping box. some people still get the shipping box's. officially they're only required to send you a UPS label while you pack up your unit.
