E85 Dvd Ram? Confused on Concept

350 Views 6 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Fritz Jung
Hummmm

I see refs here to DVD ram... as a place to store/hold data prior to burning or porting to a PC.

I don't see this.

I see HDD ... The hard disc side of the unit

and dvd-R .... The DVD burning side.

since I am 'dubbing' to the DVD-R ... I am under the impression that I AM writing to disc.. and permanently taking up space on the DVD... Yes, I understand that I can erase a section etc. before I finalize but don't get that DVD space back...

Question 1: So what is and where is DVD Ram ?

and why is it 'happening' ?

Question 2: How do get content moved from the e85 directly to a macintosh G5 ?

any thoughts ARE appreciated.

oh this is an easy one, even I can handle it.. at least the first question..

DVD-Ram is a DVD disc, looks exactly like a DVD-R disc, except the recording surface looks much different. You need to purchase those discs separately, just like the DVD-R discs.

The DVD-Ram disc is like a portable hard drive. Just be careful with it and keep it protected/clean.

As far as the G5 question, I will defer to others. I don't think the Panny has a connection that allows you to go directly into your G5. You must use your DVD-R disc. If you want to use DVD-Ram discs, then you must buy another external ram drive for your Mac as the superdrive doesn't read/write the ram discs.

thanks Mr. Cruel ... that helps to clarify.

and I don't want to confuse dvd-ram with say DVD-RW .... Correct?

Since RAM means 'random access memory' I was under the impression that DVD-ram was a temp storage area in the E85.

BTW: What are the advantages of use a DVD Ram disc ?

DVD-Ram & DVD-RW or +RW are competing formats, but similar in overall intention.

Each have their pros and cons (and champions and detractors), both allowing you to save and erase data many times over.

You may want to search this forum using those terms "dvd-ram' "dvd-rw" as there have been many a heated discussion over pros/cons. :D
now I am starting to buy a clue...

DVD ram is write read and erase vs.

dvd rw with is write/read until it is full

yes?

So... some folks are doing their live coversions directy to DVD-ram as a means to toss it in their computer as a method of transfer.

Hummm....

My tiny experience with ripping FROM my DVD-R creations has been too slow... I think I need to find a quicker ripper. - Fact is I want to rip MY ORIGINAL material - Yet due to the paranoia related to folks wanting to steal copywritten material - I am running in to road blocks.

I understand that you CAN Dump a DVD-R disc made on the E-85 back to it's hard drive via the dubbing feature... Anyone know if there is a quality loss? - Can I select fave clips?

I got the e85 cause I don't want to tie up my Mac G5 whist I convert some 800 vhs tapes... BUT the editing/authoring data 'features' on the e85 are Jurassic at best. - I am sure I am not the only one out there that wants to do NICE production 'best ofs' via a decent editor. -

(off to search out mac rippers)

I just PM'd you with some random info that may or may not be of use to you.

Btw, I don't think you can add another drive (as in Ram drive) to the G5 case. Afterall, there's only one available slot, and that's taken up by the superdrive.

So I guess you need an external dvd-ram drive if you decided to go that route. I'm not a 100% sure, but I think transferring data from your Panny recorder via a dvd-ram disc would be fastest and least "lossy" method, at least, in comparison to transferring from a dvd-r disc.

least 'lossy' would be good.. In it's own way that can be as bad as generation loss. -

The super drive is not as 'super' as it was last year, even this 4x one.

I will no doubt replace it with a dual layer 8x or whatever is offered up later this year.

Although I have only been 'burning with the e85 for three weeks it sure is doing the job... many of these VHS tapes are 24 years old and time is running out on them... All in all I am happy with what this appliance does.

and thanks big time for the tips you sent via the PM.
