E85 Tip

I had a show that for some reason would not burn, I ruined 3 DVD's trying to get it to record. I figured there must be a bad spot on the HD somewhere making it puke when it hit that spot while dubbing.

I got the idea of placing it on a RAM disc and it worked. The moral of the story - if you can't burn it to a DVD-R, try a RAM disc. I hate wasting a RAM disc for this, but I only payed .39 each so what the heck.

What happens if you high speed dub it back to the HDD (from RAM) and then try to copy it to DVD-R again?
I had thought about that and I am going to try that shortly to see if it works.
Also make sure to physically clean the disc surface so that there are NO dust specs. Even right out of the package most discs are slightly dirty. The HS2 came with a cloth for that purpose, not sure if the 85 still does or not...

I ruined the very first disc I ever burned but after that I clean them and I've never had another problem. I use Maxell media exclusively now and I've probably burned about 100 discs. (I don't archive very much material)
These are the only disks I've ever ruined, out of over 200 burns. I segmented a 5 1/4 hour show into 3 segments and the other 2 burned just fine, that's why I suspect it was a file issue.
Interesting... Did you try forcing the unit to re-encode just to troubleshoot a possible file issue?
Re-encode? What do you mean? You mean vs high speed dub? No, I just high speed dubbed to the RAM disc.
Yeah that's what I meant. Like, record onto the DVD-R in real time instead of high-speed. When recording in real time the unit actually re-encodes the video so it's not just a bit-for-bit copy. It's no big deal, I was just wondering.

Did you read that post about the one guy who seems to have a bad sector or something on his hdd? Apparently he would get a 1 second glitch on some recordings and they could be recorded onto DVD-RAM but no -R...
Too late for that, I already deleted it off the hard drive. I think I am going to back up all of my programs to RAM then reinit my hard drive. I've read here that the E85 is famous for the drive going south from bad spots.
I had a similiar problem on my E-80. It's about 14 months old. I use the shorten segment and divide function a lot. But every since I heard about the hard drive problems. I have formated my hd about every 6 weeks.

I have been recording a asian subtitle drama 5 days a week. There are no commerials and each episode is about 31-33 minutes in length. I record this drama to the HD in LP mode. Then high speed 7 episodes to a dvd-r. Two weeks ago I did another high speed dub of 7 episodes and it failed on the 3rd one. I tried 3 brands of dvd-r and each one failed as soon as it got to the third episode. So I figure it was a bad spot on the hd. So I ended up high speed dubbing that episode to a dvd-ram like Marissadad. I transfered what files I had left to dvd-ram and formated the drive

I did high speed dub that episode back to the hd but never back to a dvd-r. But after reading these messages I decided to try. It will not let me high speed dub to a dvd-r. I then tried to just dub it to a dvd-r in LP. I tried a couple of different dvd-r's and each time it failed. The 2nd time it went about 20 minutes into the dub when it failed.

My only course of action now is to record this episode to a vhs tape and then either back to the hd or straight to a dvd-r.

This is the first time I have run into this problem. I hope this is not the start of my e-80 hard drive going. I really do use the shorten segment and divide function a lot. Always coming close to running out of hard drive space.

Well so much for the real-time transfer... :(

Think it might be worth trying 1 disc at SP mode, just in case the LP mode is still doing bit-for-bit, being that the original content is LP? At least that would save you from going down to VHS. Actually, go SP to DVD-RAM, HS back to HDD, and then SP to DVD-R. I'm just curious if it would work is all. If you don't want to bother I don't blame you. :)

Nope does not work. I could not record that episode to dvd-ram in SP mode. It failed 10 minutes after I started recording to dvd-ram. I guess the file is hosed for good.
Wow... Thanks for posting your results though; never know when someone else will run into the issue.
