Earthquake Sub Zero's 15" for Home Theater

2788 Views 15 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Jim Walter
Hey guys

A friend of mine is selling 2 Earthquake Sub Zero 15" subwoofers for less than a 1/4 of the price

I was wondering if these could be used in a custom Home Theater sub box, space and size is not an issue and the room is very large

Just had a crazy idea and thought i should check up with you guys first here

He will be sending me the T/S perimeters soon after which i will post them

What size amp will be required for them.....will a 1000w rms amp work?

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't use them for HT use.

Qtc of the driver .88 - that's pretty high!
With such a high Q, they really shouldn't be too "musical" ... but if you already own them ... its worth a shot to see what they can do. Put them in as big of a box as you can stand.
thanks guys....nope haven't bought them yet and don't think i should then

i heard them when they were in my friends car and they weren't very musical.....they got low and reproduced Rap tracks well but other than that they sounded sloppy....was hoping i could change that with a different box design when using for home use

just another question....why would a driver with a high qtc not be musical?
With a higher Q the driver will store energy longer and have a subjectively "slow" sound. Comparing something with a much lower Qtc will allow it to fit in smaller boxes and possibly be fit for a reflex application.
Subs engineered for db drag races are not favorable in the house...unless you want to really bump some rap music.

I'd keep saving my money if I were you.
cool i understand now guys.....so i guess they are not the sound quality subs that EQ claims them to be......

i would like to buy one of these subs that users on this forum frequently use but one problem.....none of it is sold here in South Africa

here are some brands of car audio subs i can get hold of......DLS, Rockford, Treo, JBL, Soundstream, Pioneer, Atomic, RE, MTX

are there perhaps any models from those manufacturers that others have found to work well for home application?

thanks again for the help guys

thanks again for the help guys

- Can't you just ship the woofers to south africa ?
that unfortunately costs big bucks concerning all the import duties and shipping
Can you get a JBL W15GTI? Its probably one of the best options you have for the brands you provided.
@evilbeaver - yes i can....saw it at a shop....that is one HUGE subwoofer....works out to about $450 if i convert our rands into dollars

do you know of someone who has used this sub in the home before?

I have used one in my truck, and there are a few here than have done Home Theater subs as well, hopefully they will chime in too.

I loved mine ... it was insanely powerful...easily equal to the TC3000 and an LMS proto that I compared it to.
Are the 10, 12, and 15" sizes of the GTI the same except for the size?
Not according to the specs. The 12" and 15" have a different coil (longer winding, same DCR) ... don't know about the magnetic gap though.
