Just a simple question.


Because the Blu-Ray movies are Hi-Def, when you have a 16x9 screen (I have a 42" plasma), does the actual player and movie fill the whole screen, like HD channels?


I wasn't sure if Blu-Ray movies came in widescreen and if they did, if you still get the letterbox.

It all depends on the original aspect ratio ("OAR") of the movie. If the OAR of the movie is 2.35:1, then you will see black bars top and bottom. If the OAR is 1.78:1, then there will be no bars.


Black bars are a good thing, it means that you are seeing everything that the director intended you to see like in the movie theater.


HBO zooms the movies; thus, cutting off material and spoiling the sharpness of the picture.


OAR is a beautiful thing. Your plasma, however, may have a zoom button. Though, I do not recommend it when viewing glorious hi-def via Blu-ray.

The answer depends on the original aspect ratio of the film. Whatever it was when shot on film is what you get. Some movies will fill the screen, others won't. Google "original aspect ratio film" to learn more.
