There is an echo in the front of my theater room. As you walk towards the back of the room the echo goes away. I do have hanging curtains and a carpeted riser in the back. I am going to put a fixed screen on the front wall with hanging velvet drapes around it. I am using def tech 7002's directly on the sides of the screen. They are bipolar so dont you want the sound to reflect off the front wall or not? I read that front walls are usually supposed to be completely dead but doesnt that defeat the purpose of bipoles? If the front wall is supposed to be dead do I have to put something behind the fixed screen? New to this stuff so appreciate the help.

Did you put anything on the front wall, or is the screen going there?

Some put Linocoustic on the front wall, and then move the screen out from the wall an appropriate distance. When I did that, any echos that may have been there before, went away.

if they are no good why do so many people have def tech in their home theaters? i would hate to have to spend more $$$ to change speakers. I was just going to put the screen on the wall, not build a screen wall. I guess ill just have to live with imperfection, i probably wont be able to know the difference anyways.

Most of the people that use Def Techs, are two channel freaks and design the system to be tilted performance wise in that direction.

If you are maximizing surround / 6 channel generally, you generally want direct radiating speakers on the front sound stage in particular.

back to the room.. Are you fully populated with furniture? Generally any slap echo happening in the middle or upper freqs is greatly reduced. the furniture can make a big difference on this as well. Microfiber is very good at reducing or even eliminating this type of slap echo.

So much so, that most of us just worry about the sub as far as EQ'ing a room goes.

right now i have 3 leather berklines sitting on a 7 inch riser i built. there is velvet curtains in the back, i think helping with echo back there because there are none. Up front there is nothing, the front 12 feet of the room are just speakers and awaiting screen. My def tech, 15tl plus sub is in the back and I have my 7002s set to large so I have alot of bass going on but I dont know what good tight bass is supposed to sound like I guess.

I am also using DT 7002 . I am currently experimenting with putting sound absorption in the middle of the wall to allow a certain amount of reflection off the front wall. (behind speakers) My feeling is that you want to allow the speakers to work as designed or buy new speakers. For me, new speakers are currently out of the question and I love the way my def techs sound in my upstairs non-dedicated theater. I will update your thread as the results come in on the amount of absorption.

Sounds to me like flutter echo, this can be treated with the correct implementation of Diffusion and obsorbtion in your room....

Cheers....

thanks mountain ash, I really dont want to get new speakers either, I think they sound good but I didnt know if they could sound better if i got rid of the echo in the front part of the room. Are you using some sort of bass trap to control the subs in your 7002s, i really dont understand bass trapping but i thought i might need something with the 7002s and my 15tl plus firing all together.

Yes I am doing some bass trapping in the false wall and the soffit above it. I really don't understand that much...just the basics. I am a "seat of the pants" type of guy so I am doing a lot of experimenting. I do think bass trapping is necessary...I just do not want to counteract the bipolar efect of the mains.

That sounds right to me. Any pics of the room? That would help a lot.

firebrick,

Are you doing any of your regular listening in the front part of the room, where you can hear this echo? If not, there's nothing wrong with it being there, per se. Otherwise, an inch thickness of semi-rigid fiberglass will probably fix it.

Well that makes sense I just thought since everyone said the front of the room should be dead it may be impacting where I sit. Ill have pictures up sometime. Right now I just have my pioneer elite pro720 sitting where the screen is going to be, waiting for tax return for projector(unknown), screen(carada), ps3 and pioneer elite sc05.
