Hey guys, I just picked up a sony 1020 for my Dad for $100. He's mounted it inverted and alls well except for covergence.

It originally used a curved Sony silver screen. But now I want to use it on a flat white screen at 80 inches. Problem is the edge focus is lousey and I'm running out of convergence adjustment on the edges of the screen.

Good things Dad is non critical but I can'r watch the damn thing with these faults.

Any tricks to fix the edge focus when changing from curved to flat screen would be excellent.

Thanks Graham

Did you try the lens focus? The wing nuts on top of the lens? The one closest to the front is for the edge. The one near the tube rotates the whole lens, and sets main focus. This is MECHANICAL focus.

Try that first. Try it on the green first, then adjust the red and blue to match.

Already done that, both for the edge and the centre.

The centre is actually quite sharp, its the edges that are the problem. I can rotate the edge focus back and forth and dosent even look like getting close to focus.

But when I use a white card on the edges and walk toward the project the focus is some way forward of the screen about where the sides of the bent screen where.

Help ??

The 1020 is from 1984-1985. If you get _ANY_ picture out of it, that's a good thing.

Tubes can age even if lightly used, so figure the blue might have fungus in it or the tube is worn out.

I have had the lenses off and believe this, there is only very faint wear pattern I can only just see. Its certainly not visible on the screen.

Tell you what though, it hasn't any fans !! It so damn quiet. I wish mine was like that.

I notice that the lenses have no adjustment for flapping. (pre flapping ???)

Can the edge focus be adjusted by moving the focus coil back and forth on the tube neck ?? How does this affect the centre focus ?? or any other tube or coil movements ??

Any other tricks I can try ???

And it IS SOOOOO quiet... wish my nec were like that... wish it LOOKED like my nec :)

If you can post a picture of the test grid with the lens off the blue tube, then I'l tell you if you have tube problems or not.

what about the adjustable focus on the side, perhaps focus edge then move to centre. And yeah mine has a usable picture... so longs as you can make out shapes, the kids will watch anything.
