Editing On A PC

Hi,

Is there a way of editing the recordings made on a set top DVD recorder using my PC?

The issue is getting them to you PC. Once there, a whole bunch of programs exist for editing and creating professional looking DVDs. I don't use a computer for editing, but others here do it extensively and can help with transfer methods, and software titles.
steve12,

I record multiple titles on a -RW disc via a Panny ES15 and take that to the computer to edit out commercials, add menus, and burn to a -R disc (mostly episodic stuff for my kids). I'm currently using MovieFactory 5 to do this. Per information I've gotten from various places including Ulead's forums, the import is supposed to be lossless - extracting the mpeg from it's VOB container as opposed to a conversion. There is a trial at the vendor website so you can see if it works for your situation. This isn't for everyone because it's a real bare-bones package but it's working for me where other more expensive packages haven't met the need.

DVD-RAM is a different story. I have used them some but have to process them with other packages requiring a more convoluted approach (you can do some searches on AVS and see the various packages folks suggest for those).

Hope this helps.

Gene
Thanks for your replies.

I want to edit home movies ( as well as other stuff). I am transferring the home movies on a VHS to DVD recorder.

So, I need to use Rw discs to be able to edit on a PC?

Then once there use a video editing program?
I use TMPGEnc DVD Author when editing on a pc.

Go to www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/authoring-dvd for a list of programs (free ware to payware) and try a few until you find one that suits your needs.
Thanks.

Just to make sure , I have to use RW discs when I record on the set top in order to be able to bring it in on my PC and edit them? Right? I also gather that they shouldn't be finalized?

Yes, use RW discs but they should be finalized or your pc's drive might not read them.

I copy the RW files to my computer's hard drive, edit them on the computer, and write the authored files back to the RW disc to test in my player before burning to dvd-r.

Also, there are some software players you can use to play the authored files on before burning to dvd-r.
Here what I do: I use DVD+RW in my Panasonic ES-15 (You must do this for it to work in a computer: after recording you must go into "Functions" then "DVD Mgmt." select "Create Top Menu") & my Liteon 5005. You do not have to finalize them!! I then put the DVD in the computer & copy the "VIDEO TS" file to the hard drive. Then I use "Nero Recode" for fast cut and burn or "Nero Vision Express" for designing a nice DVD. Works great and saves $$ you can reuse the DVD+RW's many times over. I'm still using many over and over again from 3 years ago!! Hope this helps!

They don't have to be RW discs. It's just that you can re-use RW discs for other things after you've transferred the content to your PC.

My first DVD recorder (a Panasonic E85) couldn't write to -RW discs, so I had to use -R to transfer stuff to my Mac. At first I didn't like "wasting" discs for that, but then I realized I could use those "original" discs as backups for my projects.
TMPGenc DVD Author can import directly from DVD-RAM. So can Nero Vision.
It's pretty easy. I use Ulead DVD Movie Factory 5.
I tried Ulead Movie Factory and actually paid quite a bit for Ulead DVD Workshop, which love for more complicated projects, but I seem to always rather use TMPEG DVD Author for its simplicity and ability to use about any kind of input. I just upgraded to DVD Author 3 and its great.
One of the best programs for digital editing is Womble. www.womble.com

This program, which is a snap to use, is extremely fast because of its lossless file preparation. Believe me, I've spent a load of money on the leading home editing programs (Avid Liquid, Premiere, Ulead, Pinnacle...), but in most cases I find myself choosing Womble.

In cases where I need to create a very professional level DVD (many menus, subtitles, and interactive features), I use Womble to edit the video and DVDLab Pro to author the DVD.

Womble will work effortlessly with RAM or RW discs. I use both (I use the VRO. file select for RWs, which works well for editing and the disc doesn't have to be finalized).

Womble creates an MPG. file that works well with TMPGE DVD Author and other DVD authoring programs. But if you're simply looking to make nice DVDs with a menu and chapter stops, Womble will do it all.

Videonut :

Will Womble burn dvd-rams that can be read by an e80 Panny dvd recorder ? All my archiving is on dvd-rams and I was wondering if I could grab internet video, edit and burn them using Womble and output on dvd-rams.

I believe that MovieAlbumSE is the only PC software that will burn RAM disks in the proper format. Or maybe ULead will do it as well, not sure?

It looks like B's Recorder Gold8 DVD will also do that.
Okay, as someone who has all his video on dvd-ram : I downloaded a trial version of Ulead Movie Factory 6 Plus. The good news is that it can burn to dvd-ram in a format that my Panny e80 can read. The bad news is that the title cannot be changed on the Panny in any way. I've also tried the following programs :

1) Imtoo Dvd Creator : The web site says that it can burn dvd-ram, but if you go to the faq area, they admit that it can't.

2) Easy DvD Burner : Not Vista compatible.

3) NeoDVDvideo 8 Hollywood : Install Wizard locks up during "Win Zip Self Extractor".

This is exactly why I avoided pc video in the past. Nothing is compatible with anything else. B's Recorder Gold 8 might work for me but they do not offer trial software and I am not crazy about getting burned if it doesn't work either.

Windows Media Center has some neat features, but alas, it isn't dvd-ram compatible either.

Maybe my best move would be to buy a video card and output via s-video to my Panny and just do it that way.

I'd stick my head in the oven, but that might lockup and give me an error message too.
