EDTV Owners with HD Cable Boxes?

702 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  JohnMR
I'm in the process of getting a TH-42PWD8UK after being driven nuts by the fan noise from my HD8UK. (At 10', I figure an EDTV is all I really need anyway.)

I have a Motorola 6200 STB, which lets you choose how you output HD signals: either 720p, 1080i, 480p, or 480i.

I'm curious to know what other EDTV owners with HD STBs have chosen. I never really noticed a difference between 720p and 1080i on my HD set, and I'm wondering if, since the EDTV is a 480p display, if outputting 480i/p would look just as good as the hi-def signals.

The attraction of outputting HD channels at 480i/p is that I believe the TV would then allow me to control the aspect (FULL, JUST, etc.) Maybe someone with this set could confirm if this is true or not.

That is correct -- the Operating Instructions indicate that the EDTV versions are completely fanless.

I don't believe that I'm hypersensitive to noise, but I am now returning my SECOND HD8UK due to noise issues. I don't know if my room acoustics are amplifying the problem, but I simply can't live with the low droning sound of the fan!
I have a panasonic edtv plasma with a motorola box and I've noticed that outputting 1080 is best, much better than 480 (though I suppose I could be imagining). With 720, I noticed some distortion for some reason.
I have my Moto 6412 outputting 1080i to my 42PD25. Looks great.

I also have a 42PD25 with a Comcast Motorola 3412 DVR and the picture quality is MUCH BETTER when it is set to 1080i.

Interesting. I thought this might be the case because I expect the TV has a better scaler than the STB.
I have all of my 42"s ED's on Dish Network HD boxes and I also get the best PQ set to 1080i.
