emotiva amp alternative

3443 Views 36 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  budkole
I just loook at the spec for upa 7 emotiva amp. It stated that it weigh at about 71lb. That is a very heavy amp. I am affraid that my shelf made from MDF would not support it. Any other alternative that offer the same bang for the buck but not weigh as much as the emotive?

make a stronger shelf?

That was my thought, too. Certainly would be the least expensive.

On the other hand, you can spend more money and look into these....

Some assembly required (unless you want to pay more, there's an option). Forget D-Sonic. UcD is better than ICEPower.

yup... might be able to get away with just doubling up the shelf...

yea, something from dennis would definitely fit the bill...
Chris...I toyed with getting one of those D-Sonics to pair with an EMOTIVA UMC-1 last year. But, to my knowledge, the UMC-1 still hasn't hit the streets.

As you know, now I don't need a pre-pro nor a new amp.

sometimes it's scary how much we think alike...

i did too, but like you, no longer need that type of setup...

the umc-1 is STILL vaporware?

While I've never heard UCD amps, I'm into my second go-round with ICE amps and I can say with certainty there's nothing "wrong" with ICE amps from a sonic or music reproduction point of view. They are incredibly accurate and powerful.

A blanket statement like that is of no value since "better" is purely subjective.

UcD is more stable with different load impedances.

Important criteria to high quality sound reproduction, and areas the others don't measure up to, as seen repeated in third party comparative measurements if one were so inclined to look them up. IcePower is not the worst of the lot, neither is it UcD.

UcD is better. ICEPower is fine, but UcD is better.
I looked at the thread and couldn't figure out which load impedances, and at what frequencies for that matter, they were more into. Do the UcD amps also exhibit similar phase anomalies as do the ICE versions and with respect to continous power, does it become progressively smaller as one goes up in frequency? Understand please that I'm not making a value judgement here. Just asking the question.
blah, blah, blah...

if indeed independent tests exist, let's see them... it's not surprising that the vendor of a product would say their product is better...

I saw graphs somewhere on diyaudio once...

Kevin Haskins from DIYCable is a good member that spends time in the DIY forum. He sells the best 18" woofer out there for DIY....you guys could PM him to come over and offer his opinion. From all my encounters he is a very stand up guy!!

I think the Hypex amps are good amps, Im about to order some hpex amps with DSP for active speakers.

not doubting that he's a stand up guy at all penn... and i'm not doubting that they make good amps...

however, when a vendor tells me his product is better, and says "there's proof out there, but i can't be bothered to look for it" (paraphrasing from the linked thread), that doesn't inspire confidence...
I did not link a vendor site... I linked a discussion that, while involving one of the developers, does also involve many community members that know much more about the subject than you or me.
please don't assume that you know the depth of my knowledge about the subject at hand, ok?
God bless you Penn for keeping the economy from tanking worse than it is.

Sorry for assuming you would have commented on the technical aspects if you know so much about them. (I'm not actually sorry, btw.)
