Empty speaker cabinets?

507 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  EssKayKay
Hello,
I’m looking for empty speaker cabinets/boxes to install some speakers I removed from my car (two 6’x9” and two 3½”). I found what I was looking for online (eBuy7.com) for $70 which I was quite excited about until they add a $403 shipping fee. Does anyone know a vendor/site that may offer such in USA (and in that $100 range – I’m a cheapskate)?

Just asking. . .

Parts Express sells speaker enclosures. Maybe you can find something there that works for you. You might need to apply a finish if there isn’t anything finished that suits you.

Parts Express Speaker Enclosures
Thanks Charles. Parts Express is close to what I was looking for. However I was hoping for something pre-cut including the speaker open. Maybe I can find someone who can help me with that. Also, not sure about the fiberboard.

Again, thanks for the suggestion – much appreciated.

For speakers that are round, someone with a router and circle jig, that knows how to use them, should be able to cut the openings to the proper size and provide for a recessed mounting if you want a flush mounted speaker. An oval or ellipse shape would need for them to make a template the same shape out of some thin material. But if you know someone that is into woodworking, they might be able to do this without much trouble. A cabinet shop should be able to help if you don’t know an individual. If a black textured finish is something you would like, try Exohyde and the related textured roller (also from parts express). It is thick enough to cover the medium density fiberboard well. Or a lamination using high pressure laminate in a fake wood finish or even real wood veneer is probably something a woodworker or a cabinet shop could provide if you decide to use one of them.

I do know someone who is a bit of a carpenter/millworker who could do this. Not sure about the veneer. Like I said, I'm a cheapskate. I really don't want to spend too much on this since the speakers are not that high grade - maybe worth $100 total on the four of them.

Again, thanks for your suggestions. I will run this past my bud and see what he thinks,
