I have a similar setup: GS4 + USB OTG cable + Fiio E17 + Sennheiser HD590


I can't get audio output through the cable; it comes out the external phone speaker only. How does one enable digital USB audio out on a stock phone? Does it require a rooted phone or custom ROM?

I tried Fiio dac and I didn't find any improvements with it vs. using direct analog out with my Galaxy Nexus. So no USB DAC. Instead I OTG-ed 32GB USB drive to the device and connect directly to my receiver amp. Sounds great.


The GNex has a Burr-Brown DAC. Never found it wanting. Not sure about other phones. I read the Galaxy S1 with the Wolfson dac especially with Voodoo Sound is very good too. The less device my source has to go through the better me thinks.


Am I missing something?

How do you connect the FiiO DAC to your Galaxy Nexus? What is your complete setup? (i.e. Which music player / Which DAC / Which amp / Which speakers or headphones do you use?)


As far as I understand, your receiver amp amplifies the analog stream already amplified by the internal amp of the Galaxy Nexus (i.e. double amping; i.e. the receiver amp or 2nd amp amplifies noise and distortion introduced by the internal amp or 1st amp):

Usually, the cleanest path is the following:

The Hugo is amazing! The only decent cable I can find that works for USB Audio Player Pro to the Chord Hugo is the Vertere Micro USB OTG cable . Are there others around apart from the Maplin / Lindy stuff? If you have an iPhone then Onkyo HF Player works well with Audioquest Lightning cables.
