The description of the technology indicates that the switching speed of GLV is indeed very fast. So perhaps they could do their linear scanning (refresh) and have a color wheel and have it work. Their white papers seem to indicate their test vehicles just have 3 chips/arrays/whatever, which is probably more reasonable since the one of the selling points of their technology is small, cheap arrays (single columns).


More interesting to me is that GLVs can be operated digitally (in a manner similar to DLP) or in an analog fashion. In digital mode the light valve is modulated between full on/full off to affect grey scales just like DLP, but in analog mode the valve is precisely controlled to put it in a state that will produce a static greyscale level. They mention that this mode produces "film-like continuous tone images". I suppose the ultimate would be 3 2d arrays of these things operated in analog fashion and throwing out the scanning, so there'd merely be 1 update per frame, with each frame being completely static. And for the vast majority of the time the frame is displayed if their claims of switching speed are to be believed. Does that exist now in any digital technologies? LCD perhaps, but at a much slower switching speed?

I would encourage people to read and post comments on this technology. One of the white papers that is several years old ( Introduction to the Scanned Linear GLV Architecture (1998) ) reports a laboratory test vehicle of 1920x1080 resolution, 96Hz refresh and 108" diagonal image size. Other specs are >200:1 ANSI contrast and +/- .25 pixel convergence. This test vehicle apparently used the analog addressing scheme.


It would be nice to see this technology in action in the next couple of years and see how it stacks up. I didn't see any mention of black level (or I couldn't interpret the jargon enough to extract that invormation) and there are probably other things absent. But hey, the more technologies the better.
