I'll try to keep it simpler this time:

Living in Canada, I've decided to buy the sub here. Shipping, taxes, customs eliminate savings and if anything goes wrong, I'm paying almost the price of the sub to return it.

Here's what I'm down to:

Energy ESW-C8 or Precision Acoustics HD S-10 ?

Couldn't find much on the HD S-10, aside from glowing BB reviews. Could some of the pros around here let know how the HD S-10 might go with the Takes in terms of frequency response, power, and weight, which was a concern in a different, somewhat related AVS forum.

Budget: $200-300

Size: Not too big

Room: 11x14, but opens up to a second room (open concept, no door) of identical size. Second room will not be used for music or TV, but I figured it might matter anyway?

Primary use: 80% music, 20% movies; no gaming

Listening habits: Rock; don't need windows to shake; have three small kids; WAF in effect

Appearance: Black, would like to match speakers (Takes)

Trying to match this with Take Classic 5 (being brought back from US by in-laws, good newegg deal) and with either a Pioneer 819 or 919.

Thanks!

Let me help you out since no one here seems interested in helping.

Let's get down to it and discuss the pros and the cons.

1) The Energy ESW-C8 will give you better precision than the Precision Acoustics HD S-10. Tighter and more precise bass.

2) The Precision Acoustics will have more energy in the upper registers compared to the Energy. So in terms of energy, it will beat the Energy sub. But in terms of precision, it will cream the Precision sub.

That's about it for now. Ask me some questions later and I'll try to help.

Kthxbye.

Regards,

First off, thank you very much for taking the time.

Secondly, I think I'm clear on answer #1.

Re. #2: What do you mean by "upper registers"? In layman's terms, what do you mean in stating that the Precision will beat the Energy "in terms of energy"? Does that simply translate in loudness level? And how can you tell by looking at the specs?

Again, I really appreciate your input.

South Africa?! I'll be watching closely come June... Are you close to any venues?

No, it's an absolute pleasure to help. I try to help where I can.

Let me try to explain answer 2# in a little more detail. When I say 'upper registers', I mean upper bass. Bass at 50 Hz and above. So in my opinion you'll have better mid-bass impact with the Precision sub. But in terms of precision, the Precision sub isn't as precise. Not as tight or tuneful.

If I had to pick, I'd pick the Energy sub over the Precision sub. The Precision sub just doesn't have what it takes to maintain proper precision within its range. The Energy sub, however, is very precise and sounds tuneful so music sounds nice and it isn't a weakling for movies, but doesn't quite have the energy...

Looking forward to the soccer World Cup. I live in the Cape Town area......not much longer now...
