Energy Subs

hi

i have energy encore 6 system. since the manual doesnt explain much. i have a question about the sub that came with it. there is 2 knob in front of the sub. the top knob says "BL" and one below says "LPF". what exactly does these knobs do? i want to make my bass tight a little bit and dont know what to adjust. thanks.

I'm just guessing here, but I think BL is Bass Level which is like a volume control and LPF is Low Pass Frequency which controls the frequencies that the sub will reproduce, that is, the sub will play all frequencies from the lowest up to the LPF (also known as a crossover frequency).

You're right on the money ekb. Looks like page 3 of the manual if we're talking about same thing.
Yes, the BL is bass level or the volume knob. The LPF sets the cross-over point. Turn LPF all the way up and the cross over is at 100 Hz.

This only applies if you are using the "Sub" RCA jack on the back or the speaker level inputs. If you use the "X-Over" input, then the level and the cross-over point is controlled externally (for instance by your amplifier).

It is best to experiment and see what works best. Try setting your amp to "small" speakers and then to "large" speakers and see how they sound with your amp and its cross over point. Even though in theory, line level inputs are better, some claim to have had better experience setting their amp to "Large" speakers then sending a speaker level input to the sub then out from the sub to the sats.

Don't forget, good bass is often a function of a good room. If you do not have sufficient bass absorption in your room, the bass will always sound boomy and woofy and unclear.

Thanks to all the people that replied to my question. Now I can start tweaking my sub. BTW if you turn the LPF to the right most the crossover sets to 100Hz so I assume the left most is 0Hz and middle is 50Hz right? thanks again.

RL
Leftmost is 50Hz. Should have mentioned that.

I find mine works best set around 80-85 Hz.

Dave
thanks Person99. good thing i asked. lastnight i assume leftmost is 0Hz. thanks a lot. ill try your setting. do you any tips on how to make the bass tighter? i dont want a prolong bass sound. thanks again.

Here are a few tips, but you can search the forums and find answers from more knowledgable people than me:

1) Start with the sub in the corner were it will give the best bass. If too boomy, start moving it along the long wall of your room (assuming mains are on short wall) until it sounds good.

2) An Energy recommended "trick" is to put the sub in your primary listening position (that's right, put it on the floor where you sit). Now, walk around the room till the bass sounds the best. Note where you are standing when the bass sounds the best, then move the sub to that location. Then move around a bit to tweak.

3) The encore8 is rear ported, so make sure you have at least 6" of room behind the sub.

4) If you can't get the clarity you like with just position alone (quite likely), you may need some accoustic treatments targeting bass frequencies. There are a number of foam corner treatments and 4" thick panels that do not cost that much (and again, there are those that cost a fortune). Instructions for making your own at the cost of about $40 a panel can be found in numerous places including http://www.ethanwiner.com/basstrap.html

Good luck,

Dave

I should also mention, there are a number of calculators on the web you can use to calculate the RT60 of your room for vairous frequencies. You could start with those and see how bad your room looks on paper with this rough calculation to get an idea if position alone is going to do it for you.
