Episode recommendation for smallish room

439 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ANewGuy
Hi Everyone,

We're in process of putting in a 75" drop-down TV lift and I'd like to ask for recommendations for in-wall speakers please.

The room is 14'10" x 17'6" (ish). The floor plan is attached. The room is open on the right (to the great room), behind are two glass doors, and to the left are 3 arched windows. The ceiling has brickwork marking it off the list for speakers. The back walls, where the doors are, are off limits for speakers because of the risk in disturbing the ceiling brickwork to get wiring there. It's hardly a great room acoustically but we spend a lot of time there morning and night. In red in the attached floorplan is where the TV will go. It'll be centered in the niche and not offset as shown. Also attached is a pic of the wall, before the framers started on the lift cavity above. I can have the non-load bearing wall reframed to put the center speaker horizontally without too much expense.

Finally, my questions - I think I'd like to put in either Episode HT900s or HT700s for LCR and an 8" with sub enclosure (or two?) in the wall behind the screen giving me a 3.1 (or 3.2) configuration. Amp is unknown at this point but I'm very open to recommendations. Speakers will be placed around the TV when it's descended into the niche. We're also likely covering the wall with fabric to conceal the speakers, further hiding the TVs impact on the room. My thoughts are the 900s are "too much speaker" and the 700s are enough. Though the reviews on the ribbon tweeters in the 900 have me leaning back that way. So, considering how small the space is, how poor the audio will be with the glass doors behind us, the open room to the right and the untouchable brick in the ceiling, what do you think?

Thanks in advice!

How did you decide on Episode speakers? I hope this was not from some dodgy builder or installer referred to you by a builder.

No sir. Neither. I want to support an AV company that I like. We've had a lot of discussions on speakers, amps, automation, that I left off the thread. I like SnapAVs business model too.

Ah, ok. Was asking because the only time I've ever seen that company come up in these forums was when newbies got recommended them by builders and/or installers. Good for you.

Given the small size and hard reflective surfaces in that room, I would personally look for a "warm" type of speaker like a Wharfedale Diamond, or the Emotiva Airmotiv series, or something with RAAL tweeters. But if you're already set on Episode, I have no further comment since I don't know anything about their lineup.

the speakers seem capable enough. arguably more than capable. However, I would reconsider an in wall subwoofer... even though the episode subs are in an eclosed back box, there is still the possibility of vibrations transferring to the structure...

if you are thinking about an in wall sub, check out the designs with a "vibration cancelling" opposed speaker layout. check out the paradigm RVC-12SQ

Newbie question - why would vibrations transferring to the structure be a design consideration? A Google search on "vibration cancelling subwoofer" comes up with a few links from 2010, cabinet designs, and articles about Paradigm's line.

Thanks

I have an episode in wall subwoofer. The only reason I have not removed it is because I don't want to deal with fixing the drywall. I just keep i turned down enough to not rattle the walls. when I was only using that sub, whenever I turned it up, it rattled the hell out of the wall. so much so ( for me anyways) that I could not enjoy what I was watching...

Just trying to give you the benefit of my experience. of course, your mileage may vary. and there maybe techniques your builder/AV tech guy can employ to mitigate vibrations from transferring to the structure. maybe where you will install the in wall sub won't matter for you set up...

looks like you are going to have a beautiful space. My only hope is that exceeds all your expectations and provides you with much enjoyment.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the details, I really appreciate it. I'm unfortunately on a tight timeline to close up the wall and will be stuck with whatever decisions I make.

I'm definitely going to ask and see another in-wall build.

Glad to help.

Look up sound proofing techniques and/or companies that specialize in that.

Mass loaded vinyl, green glue. rockwool, isolation clips, etc...

good luck.
